THERE IS NOTHING IN THE MARGINS OR ON THE REVERSE SIDE. LONGITUDE (NOT SHOWN). LATITUDE (TOP AND BOTTOM BORDERS).
EDITION & STATE INFO : THERE ARE THREE EDITIONS KNOWN, THE FIRST WITH 5 STATES, THE SECOND (SEE MAP #243M5) WITH 2 STATES AND THE THIRD (SEE MAPS # 249G5 AND 267G7) WITH A SINGLE STATE .
ED. 1 - STATE 1-(1689)- THIS IS THE COPY DESCRIBED. IT APPEARED IN THE FOURTH BOOK OF THE ENGL. PILOT AND IN PRE-1700 COPIES OF THORNTON'S ATLAS MARITIMUS.
- STATE 2-(1689?-1698?)- ALL THE SHOALS,SAND BARS AND SOUNDINGS FROM THE ENTRANCE TO "REEDE I." IN DEL. BAY HAVE BEEN REPLACED. THE SOUNDINGS NOW READ HORIZONTALLY (N-S). THE NAME "PLUM PT." ON THE WEST ENTRANCE TO THE BAY HAS BEEN DELETED."BRANDY WINE SANDS" IN STATE 1 HAS BEEN DELETED AND RELOCATED AS "BRANDY WINE BANK". "GUDING SAND", "MIDDLE GR.", AND "HORSE SHOE" HAVE BEEN ADDED. THIS STATE PROBABLY APPEARED IN AN UNDATED ED. OF THE ATLAS MARITIMUS.
- STATE 3- (1698?-1705?)- CHANGES ARE AT THE ENTRANCE TO CHESAPEAKE FROM PT. COMFORT TO C. CHARLES. ALL THE SOUNDINGS HAVE BEEN REPLACED. THE LARGE AX-SHAPED BANK AT C. CHARLES HAS BEEN REPLACED BY A SMALLER OVAL BANK FURTHER INTO THE BAY. AN ISLAND HAS BEEN ADDED AT THE TIP OF THE CAPE. THE WORDS "C. CHARLES" HAVE BEEN MOVED FURTHER SOUTH. THE WORDS "MIDDLE GROUND" ARE NOW ON ONE LINE. A LARGER SAND BAR EAST FROM PT. COMFORT HAS BEEN ADDED. SOME PLATE WEAR IS SEEN IN THE NE CORNER OF NY BAY. THIS STATE APPEARED IN THE ENGLISH PILOT EDITION OF 1698.
- STATE 4-(1706-1728)-TWO GROUPS OF OFFSHORE SOUNDINGS HAVE BEEN ADDED IN THE SPACE FROM C. CHARLES TO THE SOUTHERNMOST COMPASS ROSE.NEARLY ALL THE STIPPLED AREAS HAVE BEEN RECUT WITH A COARSER GRAIN.MANY WORDS,FIGURES AND SOUNDINGS ARE REENGRAVED. SOME DELETED WORDS SUCH AS PLUM Pt. IN DEL. BAY ARE FULLY LEGIBLE AGAIN.THIS STATE APPEARED IN THE ENGLISH PILOT IN 1706,1713,1716,&1721.
- STATE 5-(1728-1737)- THE IMPRINT HAS BEEN REMOVED.SOUNDINGS ARE ADDED IN THE OCEAN AREA ALONG THE ENTIRE COAST. AT C. CHARLES A LARGE SAND BAR IN AN INVERTED L HAS BEEN ADDED. THIS NEW DATA WAS PROBABLY SUPPLIED BY MARK TIDDEMAN. THIS STATE WAS IN THE ENGLISH PILOT EDITIONS OF 1728,1729,1732,&1737. THIS IS THE MAP DESCRIBED HEREIN.
ED. 2 - STATE 1-(1743-1770)- THE IMPRINT WAS ADDED AS FOLLOWS- "SOLD BY WILLIAM MOUNT & THOS. PAGE TOWER HILL". SEE MAP # 243M5.
- STATE 2-(1773-1794)- TITLE AND IMPRINT WERE CHANGED. THE IMPRINT NOW READS "SOLD BY JNo.: MOUNT & THOs. PAGE TOWER HILL. THE SPELLING IN THE TITLE IS CHANGED TO JERSEY FROM JARSEY. SEE MAP # 294M6.
ED. 3-STATE 1-(1749,1767)- IMPRINT HAS BEEN CHANGED TO "DUBLIN SOLD BY GEO. GRIERSON AT THE TWO BIBLES IN ESSEX STREET".OTHERWISE IT IS ALMOST AN EXACT COPY OF ED. 1, STATE 5. SEE MAP # 249G5.

WE ALSO HAVE A GOOD BLACK AND WHITE IMPRESSION OF THE SECOND EDITION, STATE 1 WITH AN HFC ACQ. # OF SF018-TGD AND A SIMILAR COPY OF THE SECOND EDITION, STATE 2 WITH TWO SMALL HOLES WHERE THE PLATES ARE JOINED. IT HAS AN HFC ACQ. # OF G020-IGD. HFC ALSO HAS A GOOD BLACK AND WHITE COPY OF THE 1767 ISSUE OF THE THIRD EDITION, WITH AN HFC ACQ. # OF SONA018-UNHL.
