MAP #: 221S5
CARTOGRAPHER : SENEX, JOHN [PUBLISHER]
DATE: 1721
SHORT TITLE : A NEW MAP OF VIRGINIA MARY=LAND
REMAINING TITLE & ID : AND THE IMPROVED PARTS OF PENN=SYLVANIA & NEW=JERSEY MOST HUMBLY INSCRIB'D TO THE RIGHT HON.ble THE EARL OF ORKNEY & CT. KNIGHT OF YE MOST NOBLE AND ANCIET [sic] ORDER OF THISTLE 1719. (CARTOUCHE, UPPER LEFT CORNER). "REVISED BY I. SENEX" (BELOW CARTOUCHE). A SCALE OF 70 MILES IN A DEGREE (LOWER RIGHT CORNER). THE MAP EXTENDS SLIGHTLY INTO THE TOP AND BOTTOM BORDERS BUT NOT INTO THE MARGINS. LONGITUDE WEST FROM LONDON (TOP AND BOTTOM BORDERS). LATITUDE (RIGHT AND LEFT BORDERS).
UNLIKE THE HERRMAN MAP, THIS ONE AND ITS PRECEEDING STATES ARE ORIENTED WITH NORTH AT THE TOP AND REDUCED TO A SINGLE SHEET. PHILADELPHIA IS INDICATED. THE NORTHERN AND EASTERN BOUNDS OF MARYLAND ARE SHOWN. THE BOUNDARY FOR THE PRESENT STATE OF DELAWARE (THEN PART OF PENNSYLVANIA) FAVORS MARYLAND'S CLAIM. NEW JERSEY IS DIVIDED INTO TWO PARTS, EAST AND WEST. THE SHOALS AND SOUNDINGS AND THE MARYLAND COUNTIES ARE TAKEN FROM HERRMAN. THE MAP IS HIGHLY DECORATIVE AND ALMOST ALWAYS FOUND IN COLOR, BUT IS NOT AS FINELY ENGRAVED AS HERRMAN'S. VIRGINIA AND MARYLAND ARE DIVIDED INTO COUNTIES, ALTHOUGH DELAWARE IS SHOWN AS A PART OF PENNSLVANIA. ANNAPOLIS IN ALL STATES IS CALLED ARUNDELTON.
AS WITH THE HERRMAN MAP, THE BROWN-SENEX SERIES SHOWS FEW SETTLEMENTS IN THE WESTERN INTERIOR OF MARYLAND AND VIRGINIA. SANCHEZ-SAAVEDRA POINTS OUT THAT THIS MADE IT INCREASINGLY OBSOLETE WHEN A NEW SURVEY OF THE WESTERN REGION WAS UNDERTAKEN BY JOSHUA FRY AND PETER JEFFERSON (SEE MAP # 253F5).
THE FIRST STATE WAS PUBLISHED AS A SEPARATE AROUND 1685 BY CHRISTOPHER BROWNE. A 2ND STATE OF THIS MAP WAS PUBLISHED BY BROWNE AROUND 1700 AS A SEPARATE. IT WAS ALSO INCLUDED IN AN UNDATED BERRY ATLAS WHICH CONTAINED MAPS DATED 1680 AND 1700. THE DATE 1700 HAS BEEN SELECTED ARBITRARILY ON THIS BASIS.
DATA IS FROM MCS #39 AND SANCHEZ-SAAVEDRA AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE MAP STATES IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.
EDITION & STATE INFO : THREE STATES OF THE MAP ARE KNOWN IN A SINGLE EDITION, ACCORDING TO STEVENS AND TREE. COPIES OF ALL THREE STATES ARE AT THE EVERGREEN HOUSE, JOHNS HOPKINS UNIVERSITY AND STATES 1 AND 3 ARE IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.
