DESCRIPTION : THIS SMALL SCALE MAP COVERS FROM GREENLAND TO NORTHERN SOUTH AMERICA AND ALL OF THE AREA OF THE PRESENT UNITED STATES. ITS REPRESENTATION OF THE MARYLAND- CHESAPEAKE BAY AREA IS TOO SMALL TO BE OF SIGNIFICANCE TO SUCH A COLLECTION. THE MAP IS OF CONSIDERABLE INTEREST, NOT ONLY BECAUSE OF ITS COLORFUL CARTOUCHE, DEPICTION OF THE CODFISH INDUSTRY AND HARBOR INSETS, BUT ALSO BECAUSE OF ITS NOTES AND THE INCLUSION OF THE TRACKS OF CAPTAIN JAMES AND CAPTAIN HUDSON. CALIFORNIA IS SHOWN AS A LARGE ISLAND. MANY INDIAN NAMES ARE SPRINKLED THROUGHOUT THE LAND AREAS. THE FOLLOWING NOTE IS FOUND ON THE LOWER RIGHT SIDE: "YOU WILL FIND FLORIDA IN THIS MAP CALLED LOUISIANA, THE R. MISISIPI R. St. LOUIS, MASSACRE PORT & HAVEN OF Ye. ISL DAUPHINE; LE MISSIOURS R. R. St. PHILIP; OUABACH R. R. St JEROM; FOR THUS Ye FRENCH HAVE ALTERED Ye NAMES IN Ye KINGS GRANT OF THOSE COUNTRIES TO MONS. CROZAT DATED SEPt. 14, 1712."

SCHWARTZ & EHRENBERG, IN THE MAPPING OF AMERICA, INDICATE THAT MOLL'S MAP WAS AN EFFORT TO ATTACK THE FRENCH CLAIMS IN GUILLAUAME DELISLE'S "CARTE DU CANADA OU LA NOUVELLE FRANCE." OF 1703. THERE IS CONSIDERABLE QUESTION ABOUT THE EXACT DATING OF MOLL'S PIECE. STREETER'S CATALOG USES "1715?". PHILLIPS, MAPS, HAS TWO ENTRIES, ONE IS 1710-20 AND ANOTHER IS "1715?". PHILLIPS, ATLASES, I, # 554 LISTS THIS MAP AS UNDATED, BUT INCLUDED IN A PUBLICATION ENTITLED THE WORLD DESCRIBED; OR, A NEW AND CORRECT SETT OF MAPS:SHEWING THE SEVERAL EMPIRES, KINGDOMS, REPUBLICS...IN ALL THE KNOWN PARTS OF THE EARTH...EACH MAP IS ENGRAVED ON COPPER BY HERMAN MOLL AND PRINTED ON TWO SHEETS OF ELEPHANT PAPER..., FOL., LONDON, J. BOWLES [1709-1720]. IT IS MAP #7. THIS MAY HAVE BEEN A VARIANT OF THE MAP DESCRIBED HEREIN BECAUSE PHILLIPS, MAPS, LISTS THE ENGRAVER AS "G. VERTUE SCULPT.", WHEREAS OUR COPY DOES NOT HAVE A FINIAL "T" ON SCULPT. THE MAPS IN THIS PUBLICATION THAT ARE DATED CARRY DATES OF 1709 TO 1720. R.V. TOOLEY, IN HIS MONOGRAPH NO. 8 CALIFORNIA AS AN ISLAND, IN THE MCS, USES THE DATE 1720 FOR THIS MAP. PHILLIPS, ATLASES, III, # 3469 INCLUDES THIS MAP IN A MORE RECENT VERSION OF THE WORLD DESCRIBED, AGAIN AS MAP # 7. THIS VERSION OF THE ATLAS WAS PROBABLY PUT OUT IN 1736, SINCE IT CONTAINS MAPS DATED 1735 OR LATER.

HERMAN MOLL, WHO DIED IN 1732, WAS AN ENGRAVER, CARTOGRAPHER AND MAP SELLER. HE WAS PROBABLY BORN IN EITHER GERMANY OR HOLLAND, BUT ALL OF HIS WORK IS RECORDED AS HAVING BEEN DONE IN LONDON. THE ADDRESSES FOR MOLL, BOWLES AND OVERTON IN THE NOTE NEAR THE TOP OF THE MAP DO NOT PERMIT US TO PINPOINT THE DATE OF PUBLICATION OF THE MAP. SARAH TYACKE LOCATES MOLL AS "OVER AGAINST DEVEREUX COURT BETWEEN TEMPLE BAR AND ST. CLEMENTS CHURCH IN THE STRAND" FROM 1710-1732. THOMAS BOWLES WAS "NEXT TO THE CHAPTER HOUSE IN ST. PAULS CHURCHYARD" FROM 1714 UNTIL 1764 AND PHILIP OVERTON'S ADDRESS OF "NEAR ST. DUNSTON'S CHURCH IN FLEET STREET" WAS VALID FROM 1708 UNTIL 1715 AND POSSIBLY AS LATE AS 1728.

DATA IS FROM PHILLIPS, SCHWARTZ & EHRENBERG, TYACKE, TOOLEY AND FROM PERSONAL OBSERVATION OF THE COPY IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.

EDITION & STATE INFO : THIS INFORMATION HAS NOT BEEN THOROUGHLY RESEARCHED. PHILLIPS INDICATES TWO VARIANT COPIES, BUT WE HAVEN'T SEEN THEM TO CONFIRM ANY DIFFERENCES. THE TIMING OF PUBLICATION IS UNCERTAIN BUT PROBABLY OCCURRED BETWEEN 1718 AND 1720.

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : HFC HAS A GOOD COLORED COPY OF THIS MAP WITH SOME BROWNING. MARGINS ARE NARROW. ALL IN ALL, IT IS A VERY PRESENTABLE COPY.
