DESCRIPTION : THIS IS THE THIRD STATE OF AN EXTREMELY SMALL SCALE MAP SHOWING FROM LONDON TO VIRGINIA AND FROM GREENLAND TO AFRICA. ITS REPRESENTATION OF MARYLAND AND THE CHESAPEAKE BAY IS SO SMALL, CRUDE, AND INACCURATE, DESPITE THE AVAILABILITY OF BETTER DATA AS TO BE USELESS IN A MARYLAND COLLECTION. THE DELMARVA PENINSULA IS SHOWN LYING IN A NW-SE ORIENTATION. THE MAP SHOWS THE PATH OF THE VOYAGE FROM ENGLAND TO THE NEW ENGLAND AREA AND RETURN. ITS PURPOSE IS MORE HISTORICAL THAN GEOGRAPHICAL. THE MAP FIRST APPEARED IN 1707 IN VAN DER AA'S NAAUKEURIGE VERSAMELING DER GEDENK- WAARDIGSTE ZEE EN LANDREYSEN NA OOST EN WEST-INDIEN, CHEZ PIERRE VAN DER AA, 1707. A SECOND STATE, WITHOUT A PRINTED PAGE NUMBER IN THE RIGHT TOP MARGIN IS IN CARTES DES ITINERAIRES & VOIAGES MODERNES..., A LEIDE, CHEZ PIERRE VAN DER AA, 1707. THE THIRD STATE, DESCRIBED HEREIN, APPEARED IN ATLAS NOUVEAU ET CURIEUX..., A LEIDE, PAR PIERRE VAN DER AA, 1714, PART II.

PIETER VAN DER AA WAS BORN IN LEIDEN IN 1659, BECAME APPRENTICED TO THE BOOKSELLERS TRADE AT AGE 9 AND DIED IN 1733. MANY OF HIS ATLASES WERE MADE TO ORDER FROM OUTDATED PLATED ACQUIRED FROM MANY OF THE OLDER WELL-KNOWN CARTOGRAPHERS. HIS WORK LACKED ORIGINALITY AND OFTEN IS BADLY DEFORMED AS A RESULT OF INADEQUATE MAP PROJECTION. CARTOGRAPHICALLY, AA'S MAPS ARE OF LITTLE INTEREST.

DATA IS FROM KOEMAN, VERNER AND PHILLIPS ATLASES.

EDITION & STATE INFO : IT IS BELIEVED THAT THIS MAP WAS ISSUED IN A SINGLE EDITION IN THREE STATES:

STATE 1 - (1707) - IN THIS STATE, THE FOLLOWING WAS BELOW THE BOTTOM BORDER RATHER THAN THE DATA DESCRIBED HEREIN FOR STATE 3: "UYTGEVOERD TE LEYDEN DOOR PIETER VANDER AA MET PRIVILEGE." (LEFT BOTTOM MARGIN) THE RIGHT TOP MARGIN ALSO CONTAINS "PAG. 1." THERE IS NO DECORATIVE BORDER OUTSIDE THE GEOGRAPHICALLY FUNCTIONAL BORDER. IT APPEARS IN NAAUKEURIGE VERSAMELING DER GEDENK-WAARDIGSTE ZEE EN LANDREYSEN NA OOST EN WEST-INDIEN, CHEZ PIERRE VAN DER AA, 1707. SEE MAP # 207A6.

STATE 2 - (1707) - SIMILAR TO STATE 1 EXCEPT THAT "PAG. 1." IS DELETED. VERNER INDICATES THAT THIS STATE HAS AN ILLEGIBLE WATERMARK C ? M. THIS STATE WAS INCLUDED IN CARTES DES ITINERAIRES & VOIAGES MODERNES..., A LEIDE, CHEZ PIERRE VANDER AA, 1707.

STATE 3 - (1714) - THIS IS THE MAP DESCRIBED HEREIN. THE MATERIAL BELOW THE BOTTOM BORDER IS DELETED AND REPLACED BY TWO LINES OF TEXT, AS GIVEN IN THE TITLE SECTION ABOVE. THE NUMBERING OF THE MAP IS IN MANUSCRIPT. THIS STATE APPEARS IN ATLAS NOUVEAU ET CURIEUX..., A LEIDE, PAR PIERRE VAN DER AA, 1714, PART II. LIKE OTHER MAPS IN THE ATLAS, IT IS PRINTED WITHIN A LARGE ENGRAVED DECORATIVE BORDER MEASURING 21.7 X 28.5 CM.

DATA IS FROM KOEMAN AND VERNER.

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS A COPY OF STATE 3 IN OUTLINE COLORING EXCEPT FOR THE CARTOUCHE, WHICH IS FULLY COLORED. THE COLLECTION'S COPY HAS AN ELABORATE WATERMARK AS DESCRIBED AND THE NUMBER "111" IN MANUSCRIPT, CORRESPONDING TO MAP 111 IN KOEMAN AA2, P.8, VOL. 1 OF ATLANTES NEERLANDICI. THE MAP HAS EXTREMELY WIDE MARGINS. IT HAS A MDHR # OF G1399-57 AND AN ACQ. # OF BB023-DUI.
