DESCRIPTION : THIS SMALL MAP, WHICH COVERS FROM LONG ISLAND TO CAPE HENRY, IS A CRUDE DERIVATIVE IN THE MARYLAND-DELAWARE AREA OF THE JOHN SMITH MAP OF 1612 (SEE MAP #112S5) THAT HAS BEEN REORIENTED WITH NORTH AT THE TOP. SINCE THE AUGUSTINE HERRMAN MAP (SEE MAP # 173H5) HAD ALREADY BEEN ISSUED FOR OVER 30 YEARS WHEN THIS MAP APPEARED, IT WAS OBVIOUSLY OUT OF DATE WHEN PUBLISHED.

ACCORDING TO KOEMAN AND PHILLIPS, THE MAP FIRST APPEARED IN 1707 IN VAN DER AA'S NAAUKEURIGE VERSAMELING DER GEDENK-WAARDIGSTE ZEE EN LANDREYSEN NA OOST EN WEST-INDIEN, 1707. THE MAP WAS LATER PUBLISHED WITHOUT PLATE NUMBERS IN CARTES DES ITINERAIRES & VOIAGES MODERNES...., A LEIDE, CHEZ PIERRE VAN DER AA (1707). IN 1714, THE MAPS FROM THE SAME PLATES WERE INCLUDED IN HIS ATLAS NOUVEAU ET CURIEUX DES PLUS CELEBRES ITINERAIRES..., A LEIDE, PAR PIERRE VAN DER AA, MARCHAND LIBRAIRE. IN THIS PUBLICATION, THE TITLE IN FRENCH WAS ADDED IN THE BOTTOM MARGIN AND THE MAP IS ENCLOSED WITHIN ORNAMENTAL BORDERS, REPRESENTING FRAMING. THE NUMBERING IS IN MANUSCRIPT.

PIETER VAN DER AA WAS BORN IN LEIDEN IN 1659, BECAME APPRENTICED TO THE BOOKSELLERS TRADE AT AGE 9 AND DIED IN 1733. MANY OF HIS ATLASES WERE MADE TO ORDER FROM OUTDATED PLATES ACQUIRED FROM MANY OF THE OLDER WELL-KNOWN CARTOGRAPHERS. HIS WORK LACKS ORIGINALITY AND OFTEN IS BADLY DEFORMED AS A RESULT OF INADEQUATE MAP PROJECTION. CARTOGRAPHICALLY, AA'S MAPS ARE OF LITTLE INTEREST.

DATA IS FROM KOEMAN AND PHILLIPS ATLASES.

EDITION & STATE INFO : IT IS BELIEVED THAT THIS MAP WAS ISSUED IN A SINGLE EDITION IN THREE STATES:

STATE 1 - (1707) - THIS IS THE MAP AS DESCRIBED HEREIN. IT WAS PUBLISHED WITH PLATE NUMBERS, BUT WITHOUT DECORATIVE BORDER OR THE FRENCH TITLES IN THE BOTTOM BORDER. IT APPEARED IN NAAUKEURIGE VERSAMELING DER GEDENK-WAARDIGSTE ZEE EN LANDREYSEN NA OOST EN WEST-INDIEN.

STATE 2 - (1707) - SIMILAR TO STATE 1 EXCEPT THAT "PAG. 7." IS DELETED. VERNER INDICATES THAT THIS STATE HAS AN ILLEGIBLE WATERMARK C ? M. THIS STATE WAS INCLUDED IN CARTES DES ITINERAIRES & VOIAGES MODERNES..., A LEIDE, CHEZ PIERRE VANDER AA, 1707.

STATE 3 - (1714) - THE MATERIAL BELOW THE BOTTOM BORDER IS DELETED AND REPLACED BY THE FOLLOWING: PEUPLADE DES ANGLOIS DANS LA VIRGINIE, VISITEE ET AUGMENTEE PAR JEAN SMITH, SUIVANT QUIL L'A DECRITE LUI MEME DANS SON VOYAGE, NECTIFICE SUR DE NOUVELLES OBSERVATIONS AITES DEPUIS, TOUT RECENMENT DONNEE AI PUBLIC PAR PIERRE VANDER AA, A LEIDE. AVEC PRIVILEGE. THE NUMBERING OF THE MAP IS IN MANUSCRIPT. THIS STATE APPEARED IN ATLAS NOUVEAU ET CURIEUX..., A LEIDE, PAR PIERRE VAN DER AA, 1714, PART II. LIKE OTHER MAPS IN THE ATLAS, IT IS PRINTED WITHIN A LARGE ENGRAVED DECORATIVE BORDER MEASURING 22.4 X 29.3 CM. SEE MAP # 214A5.

DATA IS FROM KOEMAN AND VERNER.

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS A COPY OF THE FIRST STATE IN OUTLINE COLOR. IT HAS A MDHR # OF G1399-43 AND AN ACQ. # OF JP019-HUL.
