NOT ALL THE EDITIONS OR PRINTINGS ARE KNOWN TO WRITER, ALTHOUGH PHILLIPS LISTS THE FOLLOWING: (1ST ED.) 1700, 1701, (2ND ED.) 1707, 1708, (3RD ED.?) 1718, 1719?, 1722, (4TH ED.) 1726. WELLS, WHO WAS BORN IN 1667, DIED IN 1729. THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS NOTES AN EDITION OF 1738 AS THE ONLY ONE KNOWN TO HAVE APPEARED AFTER HIS DEATH. WELLS WAS A MATHEMATICIAN, GEOGRAPHER AND CLERGYMAN.
SARAH TYACKE IN HER BOOK LONDON MAP-SELLERS 1660-1720 NOTES TWO ADS IN THE LONDON GAZETTE ADVERTISING THIS PUBLICATION. ONE RAN FROM AUG. 28 TO SEPT. 1, 1701. IT GAVE THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION: "PRICE UNBOUND IN IMPERIAL PAPER 2L. 14 S. 6D. IN ROYAL PAPER 2 L. 3S. SOLD BY A. CHURCHILL AND T. BENNET; IN LONDON; AND J. HALL AT THE THEATER IN OXFORD". A LATER AD APPEARING FROM 23-26 FEB 1701/2 NOTED: "REPRINTED IN THREE SORTS OF PAPER, AND SOLD AT THE FOLLOWING RATES, VIZ. IMPERIAL 2L. 14S. 6D. FINE ROYAL 2L. 3S. COURSE ROYAL 1L. 5S. BY A. & J. HALL, BOOKSELLER, IN CAMBRIDGE, ALL THE BOOKSELLERS IN OXON, AND SEVERAL IN THE COUNTRY"
THE TITLE WAS UNCHANGED FROM THE 1700 TO THE 1738 PRINTINGS AND IN ALL LIKELIHOOD THE MAPS ARE FROM THE SAME PLATE. HOWEVER, WE DO NOT KNOW THIS FOR CERTAIN. THE PLATE WAS ENGRAVED BY SUTTON NICHOLLS.
DATA IS FROM PHILLIPS, ATLASES, TYACKE'S LONDON MAP- SELLERS 1660-1720, AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE COPY IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.
EDITION & STATE INFO : THIS MAP HAS NOT BEEN STUDIED IN DETAIL. IT APPEARED IN EDWARD WELL'S ATLAS ENTITLED A NEW SETT OF MAPS BOTH ANTIENT [SIC] AND PRESENT GEOGRAPHY, OXFORD THEATER, 1700, ACCOMPANIED BY A TREATISE ON THE SUBJECT. THERE WERE NUMEROUS REPRINTS AND EDITIONS OF THE ATLAS, WHICH WE HAVE NOT SEEN. PHILLIPS LISTS THE COPIES IN THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS. WE HAVE NOT COMPARED THE COPIES OF THE MAP IN THE VARIOUS EDITIONS, BUT ALL HAVE THE SAME TITLE. WE BELIEVE THEY ARE FROM THE SAME PLATE, WHICH WAS ENGRAVED BY SUTTON NICHOLLS, BUT THIS NEEDS TO BE VERIFIED. NO PUBLISHER IS LISTED FOR THE 1700 EDITION. IT WAS PUBLISHED IN OXFORD. THE ATLAS WAS REPRINTED IN 1701. A SECOND EDITION IS LISTED FOR 1707, WITH ANOTHER PRINTING FOR 1708. THE 1718 EDITION CARRIES THE IMPREMATEUR OF GU. PAYNTER, LONDON, WITH W. CHURCHILL THE PUBLISHER. THE 1719? ISSUE WAS PRINTED BY T.W. FOR R. BONWICKE AND J. WALTHOE. THE DATE IS QUESTIONABLE, BUT IS BASED BY PHILLIPS ON THE FACT THAT THE PUBLISHERS IN 1719 FORMED A PARTNERSHIP TO PRINT SOME EXPENSIVE WORKS. THE L.C. HAS A 1722 PRINTING, LONDON FOR R. BONWICKE AND J. WALTHOE, AND A 4TH EDITION WAS PUT OUT IN 1726 (NOT IN THE L.C.). A FIFTH AND FINAL EDITION AROUND 1738 WAS PUBLISHED IN LONDON, PRINTED BY T.W. FOR J. WALTHOE AND R. WILKINS. THE DATE IS BASED ON THE FACT THAT WELL'S NAME APPEARS ON THE TITLE PAGE REFERRED TO AS THE "LATE RECTOR OF COTESBACH" IN LEICESTERSHIRE. HE HELD THAT POST AS WELL AS A RECTORSHIP OF BLETCHLEY IN BUCKINGHAMSHIRE UNTIL HIS DEATH. THE ONLY EDITION KNOWN TO HAVE BEEN ISSUED THEREAFTER WAS AROUND 1738.
IN ALL OF THE ATLAS EDITIONS, THE MAP APPEARED AS # 41 OF 41 MAPS.
HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : HFC HAS A FAIRLY GOOD COPY OF THIS MAP IN OUTLINE, BUT CRUDE COLORING, WITH MARGINAL TEARS, NOT AFFECTING THE PRINTED MATERIAL. THE MAP IS MARKED "1730" IN PENCIL IN THE LOWER RIGHT MARGIN.
