MAP #: 200M5
CARTOGRAPHER : MORDEN, ROBERT
DATE: 1700
SHORT TITLE : A NEW MAP OF VIRGINIA
REMAINING TITLE & ID : BY ROBt. MORDEN (EGG SHAPED CARTOUCHE IN TOP LEFT CORNER). "A DESCRIPTION OF VIRGINIA AND MARY-LAND." IS TYPESET IN THE TOP MARGIN ALONG WITH THE PAGE # "591" TO THE RIGHT. "PAG 75" (EXTREME TOP LEFT BORDER). A TABLE OF 25 MARYLAND COUNTIES (IN BOX ON RIGHT SIDE OF MAP). TEXT OF 9 LINES (BELOW MAP) WITH THE CATCHWORD "THE" (BOTTOM RIGHT). ON THE REVERSE SIDE IS TEXT IN ENGLISH ON PAGE 592, WITH A TITLE "A DESCRIPTION OF VIRGINIA AND MARY-LAND" AND THE CATCHWORD "HENRY'S". LONGITUDE FROM LONDON (TOP AND BOTTOM BORDERS). LATITUDE (RIGHT AND LEFT BORDERS).
THE ORIGINAL MAP FROM WHICH THIS WAS TAKEN IN 1680 APPEARS TO HAVE BEEN BASED MORE ON THE HERRMAN MAP THAN ON ANY OTHER BECAUSE IT HAS THE CHARACTERISTIC SOUTH-WESTWARD BEND TO THE VIRGINIA END OF THE DELMARVA PENINSULA. JEANETTE BLACK THINKS THAT IT WAS PROBABLY DERIVED FROM THE HERRMAN MAP BY WAY OF THE THORNTON AND GREENE MAP OF 1678 (SEE BLACK, P. 75). IN THE BOTTOM RIGHT HALF OF THE MAP IS A LISTING OF 25 COUNTIES IN VIRGINIA AND MARYLAND WITH A LETTER KEY TO REFERENCE THEM TO THE MAP ITSELF. SINCE IT IS SUCH A SMALL SCALE MAP, THIS PREVENTED THE MAP FROM BEING TOO CLUTTERED. THE MAP EXTENDS FROM LATITUDE 37 TO 40 1/4 AND THE LONGITUDE FROM ABOUT 72 TO 76 DEGREES.
DATA IS FROM OBSERVATION OF THE COPIES IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION AND FROM PHILLIPS ATLASES.
EDITION & STATE INFO : THERE ARE TWO EDITIONS OF THIS MAP KNOWN TO EXIST, OF WHICH THIS IS THE SECOND. THIS EDITION IS IN TWO STATES AND THREE ISSUES, OF WHICH THIS IS THE SECOND STATE AND THIRD ISSUE. THE FIRST EDITION WAS ALSO IN TWO STATES.
ED. 1 - STATE 1 - (1680) - ENTITLED "A NEW MAP OF VIRGINIA AND MARYLAND". THE NAME IS IN A SIMPLE RECTANGULAR CARTOUCHE IN THE TOP LEFT CORNER. THE PAGE NUMBER "369" APPEARS CENTERED IN THE TOP MARGIN, WITH NO FURTHER DESCRIPTIVE HEADING. THIS MAP IS 12.5 X 10.8 CM, ABOUT 1/2 INCH NARROWER THAN EDITION 2. IT IS FOUND IN THE FIRST EDITION OF MORDEN'S ATLAS GEOGRAPHY RECTIFIED... IN 1680. SEE MAP # 180M5.
ED. 1 - STATE 2 - (1687) - THE TITLE WAS CHANGED TO "A NEW MAP OF VIRGINIA. MARYLAND. PENSILVANIA. NEW YARSEY. BY ROBt. MORDEN." THE CARTOUCHE HAS BEEN EXTENDED TO JUST ABOVE THE 40TH PARALLEL. THE WORD "MARYLAND" IS PRINTED WIDELY SPACED ACROSS THE STATE, WHICH GIVES THE MAP A CONFUSING APPEARANCE, INTERSPERSED WITH THE MANY ALPHABETIC KEYS ON THE MAP. THE NAMES "PHILADELPHIA" AND "NEW YORK" ARE ADDED, AS ARE NUMEROUS NAMES ALONG THE SUSQUEHANNA, THE DELAWARE AND IN NEW JERSEY. "BETHLEM" NEAR PHILADELPHIA, AND A SURROUNDING DOTTED LINE ARE IMPERFECTLY ERASED. THE MAP APPEARS FACING PAGE 183 IN RICHARD BLOME'S THE PRESENT STATE OF HIS MAJESTIES ISLES AND TERRITORIES IN AMERICA..., LONDON, PRINTED BY H. CLARK, FOR DORMAN NEWMAN, AT THE KINGS-ARMS IN THE POULTREY, 1687. SEE MAP # 187M5.
ED. 2 - STATE 1 - ISSUE 1 - (1688) - THIS MAP HAS A NEW LONGITUDE SCALE ADDED AT THE BOTTOM MARGIN, DESCENDING FROM EAST TO WEST FROM 305 TO 303 DEGREES. "SOMERSET C." HAS BEEN ADDED TO THE LIST OF COUNTIES IN THE BOX TO THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE MAP AND "LOWER NORFOLK C." HAS BEEN CHANGED TO "NORFOLK C." THE HEADING "A DESCRIPTION OF VIRGINIA AND MARY-LAND." HAS BEEN ADDED IN THE MARGIN ABOVE THE MAP ALONG WITH THE PAGE # 561 TO THE RIGHT. IT APPEARS IN THE 1688 EDITION OF MORDEN'S GEOGRAPHY RECTIFIED....
- STATE 1 - ISSUE 2 - (1693) - THIS MAP APPEARS IN THE THIRD ED. OF GEOGRAPHY RECTIFIED..., BUT NOTHING ABOUT THE MAP OR THE TEXT HAS BEEN CHANGED.
- STATE 2 - ISSUE 3 - (1700) - THIS IS THE MAP AS DESCRIBED. IT IS IN THE FOURTH EDITION OF GEOGRAPHY RECTIFIED.... IT IS BASICALLY THE SAME MAP AS ISSUES ONE AND TWO OF THIS EDITION EXCEPT FOR THE ADDITION OF "PAG 75" IN THE LEFT TOP LONGITUDE BORDER. THE MAP NOW APPEARS ON P. 591 AND THIS NUMBER IS PRINTED IN THE RIGHT TOP MARGIN. THE HEADING "A DESCRIPTION OF VIRGINIA AND MARY-LAND." HAS BEEN SPACED FURTHER TO THE RIGHT IN THE TOP MARGIN. THE LETTERS "Iiii 2", WHICH APPEAR IN THE FIRST AND SECOND ISSUE OF THIS EDITION HAVE BEEN REMOVED FROM THE BOTTOM LINE. THE CATCHWORD "THE" IS AT THE BOTTOM RIGHT.
DATA IS FROM OBSERVATION OF THE COPIES IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION AND A PHOTOCOPY OF THE FIRST EDITION, SECOND STATE, FROM THE EVERGREEN HOUSE.
