DESCRIPTION : THIS IS A LARGE SCALE MAP OF THE CHESAPEAKE BAY AREA, WHICH APPEARED AS MAP # 28 IN THE THIRD EDITION OF THE FIRST PART OF THE BURNING FEN WITH DUTCH TEXT. THE TEXT OF THE BOOK WAS REWRITTEN AND PARTIALLY COPIED FROM VAN KEULEN'S FOURTH PART OF THE ZEE-FAKKEL. THIS CHART IS A REPLACEMENT FOR MAP # 26 ENTITLED "PASCAERTE VANDE VIRGINIES VAN BAYA DE LA MADELENA TOT DE ZUYDT REVIER", WHICH APPEARED IN THE FIRST EDITION OF THE BURNING FEN PUBLISHED IN 1675 BY PIETER GOOS FOR ARENT ROGGEVEEN (SEE MAP #175R5). "VIRGINISCHE PASKAART" LACKS THE PROFUSION OF NAMES ADDED TO THE THORNTON & FISHER CHART OF 1689. ALTHOUGH KOEMAN STATES THAT THE CHARTS IN THE 3RD ED. OF THE BURNING FEN ARE NOT COPIED FROM VAN KEULEN, THIS MAP IS OBVIOUSLY A SMALLER, CLOSE DERIVATIVE OF THE 1684 MAP BY CLAAS JANSZ VOOGHT ENTITLED "PAS KAART VAN DE ZEE KUSTEN VAN VIRGINIA...", WHICH WAS DONE FOR PUBLICATION IN THE SEA TORCH BY JOHANNES VAN KEULEN. IT IS BASED LARGELY ON HERRMAN AND EVEN USES HIS SYMBOLS FOR PLANTATIONS ALONG THE SHORES OF THE MAJOR RIVERS AND THE CHESAPEAKE BAY. ROBIJN ASSOCIATED HIMSELF WITH VAN KEULEN IN 1679, BUT LEFT IN 1680 OR 1681 WHEN VAN KEULEN BEGAN PUBLISHING HIS OWN SEA ATLAS. ABOUT THE SAME TIME, ROBIJN ACQUIRED THE RIGHT TO THE BURNING FEN, WHICH HE OFFERED IN COMPETITION TO VAN KEULEN'S WORK. THE BURNING FEN WAS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT PRINTED PILOT BOOKS. IT WAS PRINTED IN TWO PARTS FOR THE AUTHOR ARENT ROGGEVEEN BY PIETER GOOS IN 1675. PART ONE COVERS THE WEST INDIES AND THE EAST COAST OF AMERICA. THREE EDITIONS WITH DUTCH TEXT ARE KNOWN, AND THE FIRST PART OF THE BURNING FEN WAS ALSO PUBLISHED WITH ENGLISH, FRENCH AND SPANISH TEXTS. THE BOOK IS IMPORTANT BECAUSE IT WAS THE FIRST PRINTED PILOT BOOK CONTAINING CHARTS OF THE CENTRAL AMERICAN COASTS AND ISLANDS.

WHEN PIETER GOOS, THE PUBLISHER, DIED IN 1675, THE WORK WAS SOLD TO JACOBUS ROBIJN. IN 1679, ARENT ROGGEVEEN DIED. IN THE SECOND AND SUBSEQUENT ISSUES, ROBIJN PUT HIS NAME ON ALL THE MAPS. HE SOLD THE PLATES TO JOHANNES LOOTS AND THE REMAINING STOCK WENT TO LOOTS ON HIS DEATH. THE LATEST TRACEABLE DATE ON A PRINT SOLD BY ROBIJN IS 11 JANUARY 1707. THE BURNING FEN WAS REISSUED BY LOOTS IN 1717, SO ROBIJN MUST HAVE DIED BETWEEN THOSE YEARS.

DATA IS FROM KOEMAN'S ATLANTES NEDERLANDICI, FROM THE BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE TO THE FACSIMILE EDITION OF THE BURNING FEN AND FROM PERSONAL OBSERVATION.

EDITION & STATE INFO : ONLY A SINGLE EDITION IS NOTED BY KOEMAN IN TWO STATES.

1ST STATE - (1692) - THIS IS THE CHART AS DESCRIBED HEREIN.

2ND STATE - (1717) - ROBIJN'S PLATES AND REMAINDER STOCK WERE SOLD TO JOHN LOOTS, WHO REPUBLISHED THE BURNING FEN IN 1717. BASED ON A COMPARISON OF A REDUCED SIZE PHOTOCOPY, IT APPEARS THAT THE ONLY CHANGE IS THE SUBSTITUTION OF "I. LOOTS" FOR "IACOBUS ROBYN 1692" IN THE TITLE. SEE MAP # 217L5.

DATA IS FROM KOEMAN, PHILLIPS ATLASES AND PERSONAL OBSERVATION.

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS A BEAUTIFUL, CLEAN COPY OF STATE 1 IN ORIGINAL OUTLINE COLORING WITH A MDHR # OF G1399-102 AND AN ACQ. # OF A019-GGH1. THE COLLECTION ALSO HAS A REDUCED SIZE PHOTOCOPY OF STATE 2.
