DESCRIPTION : THIS MAP IS INCLUDED IN A SMALL ENGLISH ATLAS ENTITLED GEOGRAPHY RECTIFIED: OR A DESCRIPTION OF THE WORLD IN ALL ITS KINGDOMS, PROVINCES, COUNTRIES, ISLANDS, CITIES, TOWNS, SEAS, RIVERS, BAYES, CAPES, PORTS; THEIR ANCIENT AND PRESENT NAMES, INHABITANTS, SITUATIONS, HISTORIES, CUSTOMS, GOVERNMENTS, &c., AS ALSO THEIR COMMODITIES, COINS, WEIGHTS, AND MEASURES, COMPARED WITH THOSE AT LONDON, 1688, FOR R. MORDEN & T. COCKERILL. THIS IS THE SECOND EDITION OF THIS BOOK, WHICH FIRST APPEARED IN 1680. THE MAP WAS ON P. 561. IT IS AN EXCELLENT MINIATURE OF THE ENTIRE CHESAPEAKE BAY. THE MAP IS A REENGRAVING OF THE 1680 MAP (SEE MAP # 180M5) WHICH WAS ENTITLED "A NEW MAP OF VIRGINIA AND MARYLAND". ANOTHER STATE OF THE 1680 MAP WAS ENTITLED "A NEW MAP OF VIRGINIA. MARYLAND. PENSILVANIA. NEW YARSEY. BY ROBt. MORDEN." AND WAS INCLUDED IN RICHARD BLOME'S THE PRESENT STATE OF HIS MAJESTIES ISLES AND TERRITORIES IN AMERICA... IN 1687. ANOTHER PRINTING OF THE REENGRAVED MAP WAS IN THE 3RD EDITION OF GEOGRAPHY RECTIFIED IN 1693 WITHOUT ALTERATION AND ONE FINAL ONE WAS IN THE FOURTH EDITION OF 1700, WHERE IT APPEARED ON PAGE 591 AND HAD A MINOR PLATE CHANGE. THE ORIGINAL MAP APPEARS TO HAVE BEEN BASED MORE ON THE HERRMAN MAP THAN ON ANY OTHER BECAUSE IT HAS THE CHARACTERISTIC SOUTH- WESTWARD BEND TO THE VIRGINIA END OF THE DELMARVA PENINSULA. JEANETTE BLACK THINKS THAT IT WAS PROBABLY DERIVED FROM THE HERRMAN MAP BY WAY OF THE THORNTON AND GREENE MAP OF 1678 (SEE BLACK, P. 75). IN THE BOTTOM RIGHT HALF OF THE MAP IS A LISTING OF 25 COUNTIES IN VIRGINIA AND MARYLAND WITH A LETTER KEY TO REFERENCE THEM TO THE MAP ITSELF. SINCE IT IS SUCH A SMALL SCALE MAP, THIS PREVENTED THE MAP FROM BEING TOO CLUTTERED. THE MAP EXTENDS FROM LATITUDE 37 TO 40 1/4 AND THE LONGITUDE FROM ABOUT 72 TO 76 DEGREES. DATA IS FROM OBSERVATION OF THE COPIES IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION AND FROM PHILLIPS ATLASES.

EDITION & STATE INFO : THERE ARE TWO EDITIONS OF THIS MAP KNOWN TO EXIST, OF WHICH THIS IS THE SECOND. THIS EDITION IS IN TWO STATES AND THREE ISSUES, OF WHICH THIS IS THE FIRST STATE AND ISSUE. THE FIRST EDITION WAS ALSO IN TWO STATES. ED. 1 - STATE 1 - (1680) - ENTITLED "A NEW MAP OF VIRGINIA AND MARYLAND". THE NAME IS IN A SIMPLE RECTANGULAR CARTOUCHE IN THE TOP LEFT CORNER. THE PAGE NUMBER "369" APPEARS CENTERED IN THE TOP MARGIN, WITH NO FURTHER DESCRIPTIVE HEADING. THIS MAP IS 12.5 X 10.8 CM, ABOUT 1/2 INCH NARROWER THAN EDITION 2. IT IS IN THE FIRST EDITION OF MORDEN'S GEOGRAPHY RECTIFIED... IN 1680. SEE MAP # 180M5. - STATE 2 - (1687) - THE TITLE WAS CHANGED TO "A NEW MAP OF VIRGINIA. MARYLAND. PENSILVANIA. NEW YARSEY. BY ROBt. MORDEN." THE CARTOUCHE IS EXTENDED TO JUST ABOVE THE 40TH PARALLEL. THE WORD "MARYLAND" IS PRINTED WIDELY SPACED ACROSS THE STATE, WHICH GIVES THE MAP A CONFUSING APPEARANCE, INTERSPERSED WITH THE MANY ALPHABETIC KEYS SHOWN. THE NAMES "PHILADELPHIA" AND "NEW YORK" ARE ADDED, AS ARE NUMEROUS NAMES ALONG THE SUSQUEHANNA, THE DELAWARE AND IN NEW JERSEY. "BETHLEM" NEAR PHILADELPHIA, AND A SURROUNDING DOTTED LINE ARE IMPERFECTLY ERASED. THE MAP APPEARS FACING PAGE 183 IN RICHARD BLOME'S THE PRESENT STATE OF HIS MAJESTIES ISLES AND TERRITORIES IN AMERICA..., LONDON, PRINTED BY H. CLARK, FOR DORMAN NEWMAN, AT THE KINGS-ARMS IN THE POULTREY, 1687. SEE MAP # 187M5. ED. 2 - STATE 1 - ISSUE 1 - (1688) - THIS IS THE MAP AS DESCRIBED. IT HAS A NEW LONGITUDE SCALE ADDED AT THE BOTTOM MARGIN, DESCENDING FROM E TO W FROM 305 TO 303 DEGREES. "SOMERSET C." HAS BEEN ADDED TO THE LIST IN THE BOX TO THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE MAP AND "LOWER NORFOLK C." HAS BEEN CHANGED TO "NORFOLK C." THE HEADING "A DESCRIPTION OF VIRGINIA AND MARY-LAND." HAS BEEN ADDED IN THE MARGIN ABOVE THE MAP ALONG WITH THE PAGE # 561 TO THE RIGHT. IT IS IN THE SECOND EDITION OF MORDEN'S GEOGRAPHY RECTIFIED... IN 1688. - STATE 1 - ISSUE 2 - (1693) - THIS MAP APPEARS IN THE THIRD ED. OF GEOGRAPHY RECTIFIED..., BUT NOTHING ABOUT THE MAP OR TEXT HAS BEEN CHANGED. - STATE 2 - (1700) - THIS FINAL VERSION APPEARS IN THE FOURTH ED. OF GEOGRAPHY RECTIFIED.... IT IS BASICALLY THE SAME MAP AS ISSUES ONE AND TWO OF THIS EDITION EXCEPT FOR THE ADDITION OF "PAG 75" IN THE LEFT TOP LONGITUDE BORDER. THE MAP NOW APPEARS ON P. 591 AND THIS IS PRINTED IN THE TOP RIGHT MARGIN. THE HEADING "A DESCRIPTION OF VIRGINIA AND MARY-LAND." HAS BEEN SPACED FURTHER TO THE RIGHT IN THE TOP MARGIN. THE LETTERS "Iiii 2", WHICH ARE IN THE FIRST AND SECOND ISSUE OF THIS EDITION HAVE BEEN REMOVED FROM THE BOTTOM LINE. SEE MAP # 200M5. DATA IS FROM OBSERVATION OF THE COPIES IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION AND A PHOTOCOPY OF THE FIRST EDITION, SECOND STATE, FROM THE EVERGREEN HOUSE.

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS A RELATIVELY STRONG IMPRESSION IN BLACK AND WHITE OF THE FIRST EDITION, STATE 1 OF THIS MAP CONTAINED IN THE ATLAS ITSELF. IT HAS AN ACQ. # OF P026-T2Q* AND A MDHR # OF G1399-250. IT ALSO HAS A PHOTOCOPY OF THE FIRST EDITION, STATE 2 FROM THE EVERGREEN HOUSE. IT HAS A GOOD BLACK AND WHITE COPY OF EDITION 2, STATE 1, WHICH IS THE MAP DESCRIBED HEREIN. IT HAS AN ACQ. # OF GS019-UUD AND A MDHR # OF G1399-60. FINALLY, IT HAS A COPY IN OUTLINE COLORING OF EDITION 2, STATE 2, WITH AN ACQ. # OF JP019-HDI AND A MDHR # OF G1399-9.
