DESCRIPTION : THIS CRUDELY DRAWN SMALL SCALE MAP COVERS THE AREA FROM NEW YORK HARBOR IN THE NORTH TO THE CAROLINA LINE IN THE SOUTH AND INCLUDES ALL OF THE CHESAPEAKE BAY. MARYLAND IS SHOWN WITH A NORTHERN BORDER OF THE 40TH PARALLEL OF LATITUDE, EXTENDING ALL THE WAY TO THE DELAWARE RIVER. THE LINE IS SHOWN ENDING JUST SOUTH OF PHILADELPHIA. THE SOUTHERN BOUNDARY OF MARYLAND IS DRAWN TO INCORPORATE THE SCARBOROUGH-CALVERT LINE FROM THE POCOMOKE RIVER TO THE ATLANTIC, DONE IN 1668. THE GEOGRAPHIC REPRESENTATION OF THE BAY AREA IS QUITE SKETCHY, WITH THE CREEKS AND RIVERS SCHMATICALLY DRAWN. THE BORDER LINES BETWEEN PROVINCES ARE DOTTED AND LOOK ALMOST AS IF DRAWN FREEHAND. SEVERAL SHOAL AREAS ARE OUTLINED BY DOTTED LINE AND ONE NEAR THE ENTRANCE TO THE BAY IS STIPPLED. IN ORDER TO REDUCE THE CONFUSION OF MANY COUNTY NAMES, THE NAMES ARE SHOWN BY LETTER CODE ON THE MAP, KEYED TO THE EXPLANATION BOX IN THE LOWER RIGHT. THE METHOD OF DOING THIS SUGGESTS THAT THE MAP WAS COPIED IN THIS REGARD FROM OTHERS DONE BY MORDEN AROUND THIS TIME. HOWEVER, THE GEOGRAPHICAL DATA IS MUCH MORE CRUDE AND LESS DETAILED THAN IS THE MORDEN GEOGRAPHY OF THE PERIOD.

THE MAP APPEARS FACING PAGE 106 IN RICHARD BLOME'S L'AMERIQUE ANGLOISE, OU DESCRIPTION DES ISLES ET TERRES DU ROI D'ANGLETERRE, DANS L'AMERIQUE..., A AMSTERDAM, CHEZ ABRAHAM WOLFGANG, PRES LA BOURSE. M.DC.LXXXVIII. THIS WORK IS THE FRENCH TRANSLATION OF BLOME'S THE PRESENT STATE OF HIS MAJESTIES ISLES AND TERRITORIES IN AMERICA, LONDON, 1687 WITH MINOR CHANGES. HOWEVER, NO MAP BY THIS NAME WAS INCLUDED IN THAT EARLIER ENGLISH WORK. SOME 6 OF THE 7 MAPS IN THE 1687 BOOK WERE BY MORDEN.

BAER AND SABIN NOTE THAT THE 1688 BOOK WAS REPRINTED WITH THE NAME DESCRIPTION DES ISLES ET TERRES QUE L'ANGLETERRE POSSEDE EN AMERIQUE AVEC DE NOUVELLES CARTES DE CHAQUE ISLE & DES TERRES..., AMSTERDAM: ESTIENNE ROGER. MDCCXV. THAT BOOK IS ALSO NOTED AS HAVING SEVEN MAPS. HOWEVER, THE WRITER HAS SEEN ONLY A SMALL REPRODUCTION OF THE 1715 MAP AND IT APPEARED TO BE SIMILAR EXCEPT FOR THE DELETION OF THE PAGE NUMBER.

DATA IS FROM BAER AND SABIN.

EDITION & STATE INFO : THE EDITION AND STATE INFORMATION HAS NOT BEEN THOROUGHLY RESEARCHED. WE KNOW OF AT LEAST TWO RELEASES OF THIS MAP, THE ONE DESCRIBED HEREIN AND THE ONE THAT APPEARED IN THE 1715 EDITION OF DESCRIPTION DES ISLES ET TERRES QUE L'ANGLETERRE POSSEDE EN AMERIQUE AVEC DE NOUVELLES CARTES DE CHAQUE ISLE & DES TERRES... WRITER HAS NOT SEEN A COPY OF THE MAP IN THE 1715 EDITION, BUT FAUPEL'S AMERICAN CATALOG 88, ITEM 163 SHOWS A SMALL PICTURE OF THE MAP IN THAT EDITION. FROM THE PHOTO, THE PLATE APPEARS IDENTICAL EXCEPT THAT THE PAGE NUMBER IN THE RIGHT TOP MARGIN IS NOT SHOWN.

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS A BLACK AND WHITE COPY OF THIS MAP WITH A SMALL TEAR IN THE BOTTOM FOLD. IT HAS A MDHR # OF G1399-485 AND AN ACQ. # OF HSS016-U2. THE COLLECTION ALSO HAS A FULL SIZE XEROX COPY OF THE MAP AND TITLE PAGE FROM BAER #126 (COPY FROM THE EVERGREEN HOUSE).

BIBLIGRAPHICAL REFS. : BAER, ELIZABETH, SEVENTEENTH CENTURY MARYLAND. A BIBLIOGRAPHY, BALTIMORE: THE JOHN WORK GARRETT LIBRARY, 1949, # 126, P. 127; SABIN, JOSEPH, A DICTIONARY OF BOOKS RELATING TO AMERICA..., NEW YORK: JOSEPH SABIN, 1868-1936, # 5969 (1688 MAP ED.), # 5970 (1715 MAP ED.).
