DESCRIPTION : THIS MAP IN THE MARYLAND AREA IS A DERIVATIVE OF THE THORNTON & GREENE "A MAPP OF VIRGINIA, MARY=LAND,NEW=JARSEY, NEW=YORK & NEW ENGLAND, C. 1676. (SEE MAP # 176T5), WHICH IN TURN IS A DERIVATIVE FROM THE HERRMAN MAP (SEE MAP # 173H5). IT IS THE MAIN MAP OF A LARGER WORK WHICH CONSISTS OF THREE MAPS AND A CARTOUCHE ON FOUR SHEETS AND A DESCRIPTION. THE SERIES IS ENTITLED, IN AN ELABORATE CARTOUCHE IN THE TOP LEFT, "A NEW MAP OF THE ENGLISH EMPIRE. IN THE CONTINENT OF AMERICA. VIZ. NEW ENGLAND, NEW YORK, NEW IARSEY, PENSILVANIA, MARYLAND, VIRGINIA, AND CAROLINA. TO THE MOST SERENE & MOST SACRED MAJ.ty OF JAMES II. BY THE GRACE OF GOD KING OF GREAT BRITAIN, FRANCE, AND IRELAND, THIS MAP IS HUMBLY DEDICATED. BY IOHN THORNTON. ROBt. MORDEN. PHILLIP LEA." THE SMALLER MAPS THAT ADJOIN THIS MAIN MAP AT THE TOP COVER UP TO THE ST. LAWRENCE RIVER AND WEST TO LAKE ERIE AND TO THE BOTTOM, THE ATLANTIC OCEAN, WITH THE COAST LINES OF EUROPE AND AFRICA FROM THE SHETLAND ISLANDS TO THE GOLD COAST AND THE AMERICAS FROM GREENLAND TO GUIANA. THERE ARE COPIES OF THE FOUR MAPS IN THE BIBLIOTHEQUE NATIONALE, BUT NONE ARE KNOWN WITH THE TEXT. THE DATE 1685 WAS ASSIGNED BY THE BRITISH MUSEUM.

ELIZABETH BAER, IN SEVENTEENTH CENTURY MARYLAND A BIBLIOGRAPHY AND STEVENS AND TREE IN MAP COLLECTORS SERIES # 39, BOTH INDICATE THAT THIS MAIN MAP IS BELIEVED TO BE THE FIRST ISSUE, BUT BAER NOTES TRACES OF ALTERATIONS IN MARYLAND. WRITER CAN IDENTIFY AT LEAST 20 PARTIAL ERASURES, INCLUDING, IN DELAWARE, TREES AND OTHER INFORMATION TO MAKE ROOM FOR THE INCLUSION OF NEW NAMES FROM "S. GEORGES CR." TO "LEWIS CR." IF, AS BAER SUGGESTS, THESE CHANGES MIGHT HAVE OCCURRED DURING THE ENGRAVING OF THE PLATE, THIS WOULD HAVE BEEN MORE HASTILY PRODUCED THAN ANY OTHER MAJOR MAP OF THE PERIOD. IT IS MUCH MORE LIKELY THAT THIS IS A LATER STATE OF SOME EARLIER MAP NOT YET IDENTIFIED. SOME OF THE ERASED BUT STILL PARTIALLY LEGIBLE NAMES APPEAR TO HAVE BEEN ON THE THORNTON & GREENE MAP OF CA. 1676 (SEE MAP # 176T5), AS FOR EXAMPLE "MOETON KARONCK" IN SOUTHERN WEST NEW JERSEY. IT APPEARS TO WRITER THAT THE INSET OF NY HARBOR MIGHT HAVE BEEN ADDED TO AN ALREADY EXISTING MAP. THE SAND BAR IN THE INSET SHOWS NO SIGN OF ERASURE. HOWEVER, IN THE MAIN MAP, THE SAME SAND BAR HAS OBVIOUSLY BEEN REENGRAVED OVER A POORLY ERASED SAND BAR WITH A DIFFERENT SHAPE TO CONFORM TO THE SHAPE OF THE BAR IN THE INSET. VARIOUS STATES OF THIS MAP WERE ISSUED OVER A 30-35 YEAR PERIOD.

DATA IS FROM BAER AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE COPY IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.

EDITION & STATE INFO : IN ALL LIKELIHOOD, AN EARLIER STATE THAN IS PRESENTLY KNOWN EXISTED BECAUSE OF EXTENSIVE ERASURES IN THE MAP DESCRIBED HEREIN. PERHAPS IT WAS A VARIANT OF THE THORNTON & GREENE MAP OF CA. 1676 (SEE MAP #176T5) BECAUSE NAMES THAT WERE ON THE EARLIER MAP ARE SHOWN PARTIALLY ERASED. BAER IDENTIFIES FOUR STATES, TO WHICH IS ADDED A FIRST UNLOCATED STATE.

1ST STATE - (1682-1685?) - NO COPIES LOCATED. SEE DESCRIPTION.

2ND STATE - (C1685) - THIS IS THE MAP DESCRIBED HEREIN. THE BOUNDARY LINE BETWEEN PENNSYLVANIA AND MARYLAND IS SHOWN BY A COLORED LINE ONLY, RUNNING FROM DELAWARE BAY ON ABOUT THE 40o N. LATITUDE. A VARIANT COLORING SHOWS THIS LINE DRAWN IN COLOR SLIGHTLY NORTH OF WEST. THE SCHUYLKILL RIVER RUNS ONLY FOR ABOUT 3/4 OF AN INCH WEST FROM THE DELAWARE. THERE ARE NO COUNTIES MARKED IN EAST OR WEST JERSEY, OR ON THE WEST SIDE OF THE DELAWARE RIVER. OBVIOUS ERASURES INCLUDE A DOUBLE ROAD LINE 1/2 CM ABOVE THE EASTERN HALF OF THE HARTFORD-MEDFIELD ROAD,TWO N-S DOTTED LINES BETWEEN THE G & L IN NEW ENGLAND, NAME NW OF CAMBRIDGE, SHOAL AT SANDY POINT, SEVERAL NAMES ALL ALONG THE EAST NEW JERSEY SHORE OF THE OCEAN, THE NAME AMACARONK NW OF AMACARONK PLUS MOETON KARONCK BELOW THAT, NAME 1 CM WEST OF THE D IN DELAWARE RIVER, ONE NAME ABOVE AND ONE BELOW PENNSBERRY ALONG THE DELAWARE RIVER, SEVERAL NAMES ABOVE AND BELOW CONESTOGA ON THE SUSQUEHANNA, 3 NAMES UNDER TURKEY CREEK, MD. "37" ON THE RIGHT BORDER BELOW THE PRESENT 37, TREES AND OTHER DATA IN DEL. TO MAKE ROOM FOR NEWLY INSCRIBED NAMES FROM S. GEORGES CR. TO LEWIS CR.

3RD STATE - (C1686) - THE IMPRINT IS ALTERED TO READ "BY PHILIP LEA AT THE ATLAS AND HERCULES IN CHEAPSIDE LONDON", BUT WITHOUT OTHER ALTERATIONS OR ADDITIONS. SEE MAP # 186L5.

4TH STATE - (C1690) - THE TITLE IS ALTERED TO "A NEW MAP OF NEW ENGLAND. NEW YORK.NEW IARSEY.PENSILVANIA.MARYLAND. AND VIRGINIA. BY PHILIP LEA IN CHEAP-SIDE LONDON". THE IMPRINT WAS UNCHANGED. THE BOUNDARY LINE BETWEEN MARYLAND AND PENNSYLVANIA IS SHOWN BY AN ENGRAVED DOTTED LINE RUNNING ALONG THE 40o N. LAT. FROM THE WEST, THEN SOUTH, THEN EAST TO THE OCEAN, NOW CALLED "SEA OF THE ENGLISH EMPIRE". THE SCHUYLKILL IS EXTENDED ALMOST TO THE TOP BORDER AND IS CALLED "SCHOOLKIL". COUNTIES ARE ADDED IN NEW JERSEY AND DELAWARE. THE CHESAPEAKE IS NAMED. SEE MAP # 190L5.

5TH STATE - (C1715-1718) - "IN CHEAP-SIDE LONDON" IS DELETED FROM THE TITLE. LEA'S IMPRINT IS REPLACED BY "SOLD BY GEO: WILLDEY AT THE GREAT TOY, SPECTACLE, CHINAWARE AND PRINT SHOP AT Ye CORNER OF LUDGATE STREET NEAR St.PAULS, LONDON. DATE IS FROM SARAH TYACHE'S NOTES ON WILLDEY'S ADDRESSES. SEE MAP # 215L5.
