DESCRIPTION : THIS IS THE FIRST STATE OF A MAP THAT IS BASED ON AUGUSTINE HERRMAN'S MAP OF 1673 (SEE MAP # 173H5), BUT IS REORIENTED WITH NORTH AT THE TOP AND WAS REDUCED TO A SINGLE SHEET. PHILADELPHIA IS INDICATED. NORTHERN AND EASTERN BOUNDS OF MARYLAND ARE SHOWN. THE BOUNDARY FOR THE PRESENT STATE OF DELAWARE (THEN PART OF PENNSYLVANIA) FAVORS MARYLAND'S CLAIM. NEW JERSEY IS DIVIDED INTO TWO PARTS, EAST AND WEST. THE SHOALS AND SOUNDINGS AND THE MARYLAND COUNTIES ARE TAKEN FROM HERRMAN. THE MAP IS HIGHLY DECORATIVE AND ALMOST ALWAYS FOUND IN COLOR, BUT IS NOT AS FINELY ENGRAVED AS HERRMAN'S. VIRGINIA AND MARYLAND ARE DIVIDED INTO COUNTIES, ALTHOUGH DELAWARE IS SHOWN AS A PART OF PENNSLVANIA. ANNAPOLIS IS SHOWN IN ALL STATES AS ARUNDELTON.

AS WITH THE HERRMAN MAP, THE BROWN-SENEX SERIES SHOWS FEW SETTLEMENTS IN THE WESTERN INTERIOR OF MARYLAND AND VIRGINIA. SANCHEZ-SAAVEDRA POINTS OUT THAT THIS MADE IT INCREASINGLY OBSOLETE WHEN A NEW SURVEY OF THE WESTERN REGION WAS UNDERTAKEN BY JOSHUA FRY AND PETER JEFFERSON (SEE MAP # 253F5).

A 2ND STATE, A COPY OF WHICH IS AT JOHNS HOPKINS UNIVERSITY AS A SEPARATE, WAS ALSO INCLUDED IN AN UNDATED BERRY ATLAS, WITH MAPS BEARING DATES OF 1680 AND 1700. THE 1700 DATE FOR THIS STATE HAS BEEN SELECTED ARBITRARILY ON THIS BASIS.

A 3RD STATE OF THIS MAP WAS PRODUCED BY JOHN SENEX IN 1719 FOR INCLUSION IN HIS NEW GENERAL ATLAS IN 1721, MAP #30, FACING PAGE 240. THE IMPRINT BELOW THE TITLE WAS CHANGED TO A DEDICATION TO LORD GEORGE HAMILTON, EARL OF ORKNEY, A WEALTHY PATRON WHO WAS GOVERNOR OF VIRGINIA FROM 1710 TO 1737. HE NEVER VISITED VIRGINIA, BUT ADMINISTERED THROUGH DEPUTIES. IN THIS FINAL STATE OF THE MAP, LONGITUDE MARKS FROM LONDON WERE ADDED IN THE TOP AND BOTTOM BORDERS.

DATA IS FROM MCS #39 AND SANCHEZ-SAAVEDRA AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE MAP STATES IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.

EDITION & STATE INFO : THREE STATES OF THE MAP ARE KNOWN IN A SINGLE EDITION, ACCORDING TO STEVENS AND TREE. COPIES OF ALL THREE STATES ARE AT THE EVERGREEN HOUSE, JOHNS HOPKINS UNIVERSITY AND STATES 1 AND 3 ARE IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.

1ST STATE - (c1685) - THIS IS THE MAP DESCRIBED HEREIN. THE IMPRINT READS "SOLD BY CHRISTOPHER BROWNE AT THE GLOBE NEAR THE WEST END OF ST. PAULS CHURCH,LONDON." IN THE CARTOUCHE BELOW THE TITLE. THERE ARE NO LONGITUDE LINES.

2ND STATE - (c1700) - THIS IS THE SAME AS THE ORIGINAL STATE WITHOUT APPARENT ALTERATION EXCEPT FOR THE ERASURE OF BROWNE'S IMPRINT FROM THE PLATE. SEE MAP # 200B5.

3RD STATE - (1721) - THE TITLE IS EXPANDED TO READ "MOST HUMBLY INSCRIB'D TO THE RIGHT HON.ble THE EARL OF ORKNEY & CT. KNIGHT OF YE MOST NOBLE AND ANCIET [SIC] ORDER OF THISTLE 1719. REVISED BY I. SENEX". LONGITUDE MARKS WEST FROM LONDON ARE ADDED IN BOTH THE UPPER AND LOWER BORDER. ALL COPIES SEEN BY WRITER HAVE BEEN IN OUTLINE COLORING. SEE MAP # 221S5.

DATA IS FROM MCS #39.

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : HFC HAS A GOOD COPY IN OUTLINE COLORING OF STATE 1 OF THIS MAP WITH AN HFC ACQ. # OF CMM012-?
