T AMSTERDAM BY JOHANNIS VAN KEULEN BOEK EN ZEE KAART VERKOPER AANDE NIEWE BRUG INDE GEKROONDE LOOTMAN MET PRIVILEGIE VOOR 15 IAAREN (CARTOUCHE, TOP RIGHT CORNER). THE REVERSE SIDE IS BLANK. LONGITUDE (NOT SHOWN). LATITUDE (TOP AND BOTTOM BORDERS).
VERNER SAYS THAT WHILE HE FOUND THE MAP IN THE 1682 EDITION OF KEULEN'S THE GREAT AND NEWLY ENGLARGED SEA ATLAS..., V.3 (SEE PHILLIPS, ATLASES, V.5, # 5692), HE THINKS THE DATE IS PROBABLY IN ERROR. HE BELIEVES THIS IS A COPY OF THORNTON'S MAP OF 1689 IN WHICH CASE THE ITEM DESCRIBED HEREIN MAY HAVE BEEN MADE AFTER 1689 AND ITS PRESENCE IN THE 1682 VOLUME MAY BE DUE TO THAT VOLUME BEING A LATE GATHERED COLLECTION OF MAPS. WE HAVE OPTED FOR THE KOEMAN DATING.
THE SEA TORCH BY VAN KEULEN, UNLIKE MOST PILOT GUIDES, DID NOT CONTAIN ANY TEXT OTHER THAN A SHORT INTRODUCTION. THE AMOUNT OF CORRECTION IN THE CHARTS FROM THE 1680 TO THE 1695 ATLAS IS MINIMAL, WITH ONLY EIGHT CHARTS CORRECTED, USUALLY BY A SINGLE NAME OR SOUNDING. THE SEA TORCH REPRESENTED AN ENORMOUS ACHIEVEMENT, SINCE IT COVERED VIRTUALLY ALL THE COASTLINES IN THE WORLD THAT WERE KNOWN AT THE TIME.
GERARD VAN KEULEN, THE TALENTED SON OF JOHANNES I, TOOK OVER THE FIRM IN 1704. BY ABOUT 1707, GERARD IMPROVED MANY OF HIS FATHER'S PLATES BY ADDING TOPOGRAPHICAL DETAILS (MOUNTAINS, RIVERS, ETC.) TO THE INTERIOR REGIONS SHOWN ON THE CHARTS AND BY REVISIONS IN SOUNDINGS, SHOALS, ISLANDS, ETC. THESE IMPROVED CHARTS APPEARED FIRST IN A SEA ATLAS EDITION DATED 1709. NO CHANGE, HOWEVER, IS NOTED IN THE MAP HEREIN DESCRIBED EXCEPT FOR THE ADDITION AFTER 1684 OF "19" AT THE BOTTOM RIGHT AND LEFT CORNER OF THE MAP, INDICATING THE MAP NUMBER.
DATA IS FROM KOEMAN, PHILLIPS, VERNER AND FROM PERSONAL OBSERVATION OF THE COPY IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.
EDITION & STATE INFO : ONLY A SINGLE EDITION HAS BEEN IDENTIFIED IN TWO STATES:
STATE 1- (1684) - THIS IS THE MAP DESCRIBED. THERE IS NO "19" PRINTED IN THE BOTTOM RIGHT AND LEFT CORNERS OF THE MAP, INDICATING MAP NUMBER.
STATE 2- (1690-?) - THE ONLY CHANGE IS THE ADDITION OF "19" PRINTED IN THE BOTTOM RIGHT AND LEFT CORNERS OF THE MAP.
FURTHER RESEARCH IS NECESSARY TO PERSONALLY VIEW STATE 1.
A SLIGHTLY SMALLER BUT CLOSE DERIVATIVE OF THIS SEA CHART WAS PUBLISHED IN 1692 BY JACOBUS ROBIJN (SEE MAP # 192R5) ENTITLED "VIRGINISCHE PASKAART.." ROBIJN'S CHART PARTIALLY CROPPED THE NORTH AND WEST AREAS. THIS CHART APPEARED IN TWO STATES IN 1692 AND 1717. IN THE LATTER STATE, ROBIJN'S NAME IS REPLACED BY "I. LOOTS" IN THE TITLE.
HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS A BEAUTIFUL STRONG BLACK AND WHITE COPY OF STATE 2, WHICH WAS TAKEN BY THE DEALER FROM A BROKEN EDITION OF THE SEA TORCH DATED 1698. IT HAS A MDHR # OF G1399-35 AND AN ACQ. # OF N023-EGD.
