THE MAP EXTENDS INTO THE LONGITUDE AND LATITUDE BORDERS ON THE RIGHT AND BOTTOM. LONGITUDE (POSSIBLY EAST FROM FERRO OR PARIS, TOP AND BOTTOM BORDERS). LATITUDE (RIGHT AND LEFT BORDERS).

DESCRIPTION : THIS RATHER CRUDELY DRAWN SMALL MAP COVERING FROM "C. DE TRAFALGAR"(CAPE HATTERAS) IN THE SOUTH TO ABOVE THE 40TH PARALLEL GIVES A NUMBER OF INDIAN TRIBE NAMES APPARENTLY EXTRACTED FROM SMITH'S MAP (SEE MAP 112S5). ONLY A SINGLE TOWN "POMEJOK" IS IDENTIFIED WHICH IS SOUTH OF THE MOUTH OF THE CHESAPEAKE BAY, AND THIS TOWN IS DESCRIBED IN TEXT ON THE REVERSE SIDE OF THE PAGE. THIS MAP APPEARED IN A FIVE VOLUME BOOK ENTITLED DESCRIPTION DE L'UNIVERS, CONTENANT LES DIFFERENTS SYSTEMES DU MONDE, LES CARTES GENERALES & PARTICULIERES DE LA GEOGRAPHIE ANCIENNE & MODERNE..., PUBLISHED IN PARIS BY D. THIERRE IN 1683. A SECOND EDITION WAS IN THE 1686 EDITION OF DESCRIPTION DE L'UNIVERS, FRANKFORT, JEAN DAVID ZUNNER, AND A LATER ISSUE OF THE SECOND EDITION WAS PUBLISHED IN AN ATLAS ENTITLED BESCHREIBUNG DES GANTZEN WELTKREISES, FRANCKFURT, J.A. JUNG, 1719.

WHILE THE MAP IS MARKED "TOME IV" "289", PHILLIPS LISTS THIS MAP AS VOLUME 5, PAGE 289.

DATA IS FROM PHILLIPS ATLASES # 3447 AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE COPIES IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.

EDITION & STATE INFO : THERE ARE TWO EDITIONS OF THIS MAP. THE FIRST EDITION WAS IN 1683. IT WAS REENGRAVED IN A SLIGHTLY SMALLER VERSION FOR THE 1686 ATLAS AND THE SAME PLATE IS REUSED IN A 1719 ATLAS. NO DIFFERENCES IN THE 1686 AND 1719 PLATES HAVE BEEN OBSERVED EXCEPT FOR PLATE WEAR.

ED. 1 - (1683) - THIS MAP IS 14.8 CM HIGH, SLIGHTLY LARGER IN HEIGHT THAN ED. 2 AND 10.2 CM WIDE, BETWEEN THE NEAT LINES. IT IS ON A PAGE IN WHICH THE MAP AND WRITTEN TEXT MEASURE 18 X 11 CM. COPIES OF THE ATLAS ARE IN THE LC, JCB, CLEMENTS, NYPL, AND YALE. THIS IS THE MAP DESCRIBED HEREIN.

ED. 2 - ISSUE 1 - (1686) - THIS EDITION IS SIMILAR TO THE FIRST EDITION BUT IS FROM A PLATE SLIGHTLY SMALLER IN HEIGHT AND SLIGHTLY WIDER. THIS STATE APPEARED IN THE 1686 ED. OF DESCRIPTION DE L'UNIVERS, PUBLISHED BY JEAN DAVID ZUMMER. A COPY OF THE BOOK IS IN THE JCB LIBRARY. SEE MAP # 186M5.

-ISSUE 2-(1719)- THIS IS FROM THE SAME PLATE AS THE 1686 MAP DESCRIBED HEREIN. THIS MAP APPEARED IN MALLET'S BESCHREIBUNG DES GANTZEN WELTKREISES..., FRANCKFURT AM MAYN, 1719, PUBLISHED BY J.A. JUNG. COPIES OF THE MAP ARE IN THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS, YALE AND IN THE COLLECTION OF ARTHUR GUTMAN OF BALTIMORE. SEE MAP # 219M5.
