DESCRIPTION : THIS MINIATURE MAP COVERS THE AREA FROM C. COD TO C. HATTERAS. ITS REPRESENTATION OF THE CHESAPEAKE BAY IS CRUDE AND POORLY DRAWN, SHOWING THE BAY AS TOO ELONGATED AND NARROW. THE RIVERS ARE SHOWN TOO WIDE IN PROPORTION TO THE BAY SIZE. IT IS THE FIRST PRINTED MAP TO FOCUS ON LONG ISLAND. IT APPEARED IN SELLER'S RARE ATLAS MARITIMUS IN 1682. IT HAS,WITH MINOR SPELLING CHANGES THE SAME TITLE AS A FOLIO SIZE CHART THAT APPEARED IN SELLERS 1675 EDITION OF ATLAS MARITIMUS, WITHOUT THE DETAIL OR AESTHETIC TASTE OF THE EARLIER CHART (SEE MAP # 175S6).

IN 1675, SELLER PUBLISHED HIS FIRST ATLAS MARITIMUS. IN 1679, WM. FISHER, JOHN THORNTON, JOHN COLSON AND JAMES ATKINSON BECAME COPARTNERS WITH SELLER BECAUSE OF HIS FINANCIAL DIFFICULTIES AND REISSUED THE ATLAS MARITIMUS. IN 1679, FISHER OBTAINED THE RIGHTS TO THE ATLAS MARITIMUS. BOTH HE AND ATKINSON PUBLISHED THEIR OWN VERSIONS OF THE ATLAS. AFTER THE COMBINE BROKE UP, SELLER CONCENTRATED ON PUBLISHING MOSTLY MINIATURE EDITIONS OF HIS EARLIER WORKS BECAUSE OF HIS SEVERE FINANCIAL LIMITATIONS. THE ATLAS MARITIMUS OF 1682 WAS SUCH AN EFFORT.

DATA IS FROM COOLIE VERNER'S ARTICLE IN THROWER'S THE COMPLEAT PLATTMAKER, FROM BAER, AND FROM PERSONAL OBSERVATION.

EDITION & STATE INFO : ONLY A SINGLE EDITION AND STATE ARE KNOWN TO THE WRITER. THE CHART WITH APPROXIMATELY THE SAME NAME FROM THE FOLIO SIZE 1675 ATLAS MARITIMUS IS CONSIDERABLY DIFFERENT.

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS A GOOD CLEAN COPY OF THIS MAP IN ORIGINAL OUTLINE COLORING. IT HAS A MDHR # OF G1399-10 AND AN ACQ. # OF C019-UGD.
