DESCRIPTION : THIS MAP COVERS THE AREA FROM THE MOUTH OF THE CHESTER RIVER IN THE NORTH TO CAPE HENRY AND FROM THE ATLANTIC TO THE HEADWATERS OF THE RAPPAHANNOCK RIVER. IT IS DERIVED CLOSELY FROM THE AUGUSTINE HERRMAN MAP OF 1673 (SEE MAP # 173H5) EXCEPT THAT, LIKE THE THORNTON AND GREEN DERIVATIVE (SEE MAP # 176T5) AND THE MORDEN DERIVATIVE (180M5), IT IS ORIENTED WITH NORTH AT THE TOP. LIKE THE HERRMAN, THE MOORE MAP SHOWS THE DOUBLE ROW OF TREES ON THE EASTERN SHORE, MARKING THE BOUNDARY BETWEEN MARYLAND AND VIRGINIA. THE NOMENCLATURE IS DIRECTLY FROM HERRMAN, BUT IS LESS COMPLETE BECAUSE OF THE LACK OF SPACE. SHOALS ARE SHOWN BY DOTTED LINES.

THIS MAP APPEARED IN SIR JONAS MOORE'S A NEW GEOGRAPHY, WITH MAPS TO EACH COUNTRY, AND TABLES OF LONGITUDE AND LATITUDE, 8o, LONDON, FOR R. SCOTT, 1681 WHICH WAS PART 8 OF MOORE'S "A NEW SYSTEME OF THE MATHEMATICKS ....", 8o, LONDON, A. GODBID & J. PLAYFORD FOR R. SCOTT, 1681, 2 VOLS. THE MAP IS IN VOL. 2, BETWEEN PAGES 26 AND 27.

IT IS INTERESTING TO NOTE THAT HERMAN MOLL ENGRAVED TWO OF THE MAPS IN MOORE'S GEOGRAPHY. MOLL'S MAP ON VIRGINIA AND MARYLAND PUBLISHED FROM 1708 TO 1790 IS A SLIGHTLY LARGER, BUT SIMILAR LOOKING MAP THAT WAS ENLARGED TO INCLUDE THE ENTIRE CHESAPEAKE BAY. THIS MAP, LIKE THE OTHERS IN PART 8 OF MOORE'S WORK, IS UNDATED.

DATA IS FROM PHILLIPS, VERNER, AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE COPY IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.

EDITION & STATE INFO : ONLY A SINGLE EDITION AND STATE ARE KNOWN TO THE WRITER.

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS A GOOD BLACK AND WHITE COPY OF THIS MAP WITH A SMALL MARGIN ON THE LEFT, AS ISSUED. IT HAS AN ACQ. # OF JP015-UNL AND A MDHR # OF G1399-613.
