DESCRIPTION : THIS IS STATE 2 OF DERIVATIVE 5 (VERNER) OF THE JOHN SMITH MAP OF 1612 (SEE MAP # 112S5). THIS IS AN EXACT COPY OF THE HONDIUS-BLAEU PLATE OF 1629 (SEE MAPS # 118H5 AND 130B5). THIS MAP APPEARED IN VARIOUS ATLASES FROM 1633 THROUGH 1710. IT INITIALLY WAS PUBLISHED IN MERCATOR, G. L'APPENDICE DE L'ATLAS... A AMSTERDAM,CHEZ HENRY HONDIUS...A.D. 1633. JODOCUS HONDIUS ACQUIRED FROM MERCATOR'S HEIRS THE PLATES THAT FORMED THE NUCLEUS OF THE MERCATOR ATLAS. AFTER HONDIUS DIED IN 1612, HIS BUSINESS WAS TAKEN OVER BY JAN JANSSON, HIS BROTHER-IN-LAW, JODOCUS HONDIUS JR. AND HENRICUS HONDIUS, BOTH SONS. THE SONS LATER BRANCHED OUT ON THEIR OWN. HENRICUS DIED IN 1638. THE PLATE WAS LATER ACQUIRED BY THE SCHENK & VALK FIRM AND A SECOND STATE OF THE MAP WAS PUBLISHED WITH A CHANGE IN THE IMPRINT. THIS IS THE MAP DESCRIBED HEREIN.

IN THE TOP LEFT CORNER IS THE INSET OF AN INDIAN HOUSE WITH THE LEGEND "STATUS REGIS POWHATAN". ON THE INSIDE OF THE RIGHT BORDER AT THE CENTER IS THE STANDING FIGURE OF AN INDIAN. NEAR THE TOP RIGHT CORNER IS A LARGE COAT OF ARMS SURMOUNTED BY A CROWN AND CIRCLED BY THE SYMBOL OF THE GARTER. TO THE LEFT OF THIS IS A SMALL CARTOUCHE CONTAINING A "NOTAR EXPLICATIO". THIS IS A BEAUTIFULLY ENGRAVED AND DECORATIVE MAP.

DATA IS FROM COOLIE VERNER, MCS #45 AND HIS "MAPS OF VIRGINIA IN MERCATOR'S LESSER ATLASES", IMAGO MUNDI, XVII AND HIS UNPUBLISHED NOTES ON THE MAPS OF VIRGINIA.

EDITION & STATE INFO : THE SAME PLATE WAS USED IN ALL EDITIONS OF THE MERCATOR-HONDIUS ATLAS PUBLISHED FROM 1633 TO 1666 IN FRENCH, LATIN, GERMAN, DUTCH, ENGLISH, AND SPANISH. THE PLATE AS ALTERED IN STATE 2 WAS ALSO USED BY SCHENK AND VALK FROM 1680 TO 1710.

STATE 1 - (1633-1666) - THE IMPRINT READS "AMSTELODAMI, EX OFFICINA HENRICI HONDII." COOLIE VERNER IN MCS #45, P. 34, GIVES THE SIGNATURES, PAGE #s AND CATCHWORDS ASSOCIATED WITH VARIOUS DATED ATLASES. SEE MAP # 133H5.

STATE 2 - (1680-1710) - THE ORIGINAL IMPRINT HAS BEEN CHANGED TO READ: AMSTELODAMI, EX OFFICINA APUD (BRACE) PET: SCHENK, ET GER: VALK. C. PRIV:. LONGITUDE AND LATITUDE LINES CROSSING THE MAP HAVE BEEN ADDED AS WELL AS A DOTTED LINE INDICATING THE BOUNDARY OF VIRGINIA. THIS IS THE MAP DESCRIBED HEREIN.

DATA IS FROM VERNER MCS #45 AND HIS UNPUBLISHED NOTES, AS WELL AS FROM PERSONAL OBSERVATION OF THE COPIES IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.
