BLACK SAYS THE DATES ASSIGNED TO THE FIRST STATE OF THE MAP RANGE FROM 1673 TO 1682. THE NAME "BRIDLINGTON" IN NEW JERSEY IS ON THE MAP. IT WAS ONE OF THE NAMES GIVEN TEMPORARILY TO BURLINGTON, N.J. BY THE EARLY SETTLERS WHO ARRIVED IN AUGUST, 1677. A ROBERT MORDEN DERIVATIVE IN GEOGRAPHY RECTIFIED, PUBLISHED IN JUNE 1680, MAKES A DATE OF 1678 OR 1679 MOST REASONABLE, ACCORDING TO BLACK. TOOLEY'S DICTIONARY NOTES THAT ROBERT GREENE HAD AN ADDRESS OF "NEAR RATCLIFFE CROSS, LONDON" UNTIL 1675, WHEN IT CHANGED TO "AT Ye ROSE & CROWNE IN Ye MIDDLE OF BUDGE ROW". WE ARE ASSIGNING A DATE OF C1678 TO IT. THE MAP APPEARS TO HAVE BEEN THE FORERUNNER OF THE THORNTON, MORDEN & LEA MAP OF C1685 (SEE MAP # 185T5) IN THE MARYLAND AND DELAWARE PORTION. IN FACT, SOME OF THE NAMES AND SYMBOLS ERASED ON THE 1685 MAP APPEAR TO HAVE BEEN ON THIS MAP. IT IS NOT KNOWN WHETHER AN INTERMEDIATE MAP WAS MADE AND CORRECTED TO THE 1685 ISSUE.
THREE STATES OF THE THORNTON & GREENE MAP HAVE BEEN IDENTIFIED BY BOTH STEVENS & TREE AND BY BLACK. IN THIS FIRST STATE, PENNSYLVANIA IS NOT IDENTIFIED AND ALL THE COUNTRY NORTH OF VIRGINIA AND WEST OF THE DELAWARE RIVER IS MARKED "MARYLAND".
DATA IS FROM STEVENS & TREE, MCS #39, TOOLEY'S DICTIONARY, AND FROM PERSONAL OBSERVATION OF PHOTOCOPIES IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.
EDITION & STATE INFO : THREE STATES OF A SINGLE EDITION HAVE BEEN IDENTIFIED. WE ARE USING THE DATES GIVEN BY BLACK, RATHER THAN THOSE OF STEVENS & TREE.
STATE 1 - (c1678-9) - THIS IS THE MAP DESCRIBED HEREIN. AS ON THE HERRMAN MAP, DELAWARE RIVER IS SHOWN BUT NOT NAMED, BUT THE SCHUYKILL RIVER IS NAMED "HORE KILL OR DILLEWARE R". THERE IS NO SIGN OF PENNSYLVANIA AND ALL THE COUNTRY NORTH OF VIRGINIA AND WEST OF DELAWARE IS MARKED "MARYLAND" NEW JERSEY EXHIBITS THE PARTITION LINE DIVIDING IT INTO EAST AND WEST. COPIES ARE IN THE JCB AND IN JOHNS HOPKINS.
STATE 2 - (c1678-9) - THE SCHUYKILL RIVER IS NOW NAMED "SCHOOLE KILL OR DILLEWAR R." TWO NEW PLACE NAMES HAVE BEEN ADDED TO THE NORTH OF THE SCHUYKILL ON THE WEST BANK OF THE REAL DELAWARE RIVER, VIZ. "SHAKAMAXON" AND "GEORGE HEATHNUT'S LAND". "COHASSEY" WAS ADDED IN SOUTHWESTERN NEW JERSEY. A COPY IS IN THE NYPL.
STATE 3 - (AFTER 1682) - THE MAP HAS BEEN CONSIDERABLY ALTERED TO SHOW THE NEW PROVINCE OF PENNSYLVANIA. THE TOP PART OF MARYLAND IS NOW LETTERED "PART OF PENNSYLVANIA", THE "DELAWARE R" IS NOW SO NAMED AND THE LETTERING "SCHOOLE KILL OR DILLEWAR R" OF THE SECOND STATE STILL REMAINS. "PHILADELPHIA", "CHESTER", AND "CHICHESTER" ARE MARKED, WHEREAS THEY WEREN'T IN EARLIER STATES. COPIES ARE IN THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS AND IN THE HUNTINGTON LIBRARY.
DATA IS FROM BLACK, THE BLATHWAYT ATLAS VOL. II, PP. 80-81 AND FROM STEVENS & TREE, MCS # 39.
HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS A BLACK AND WHITE COPY DONE BY THE JOHN CARTER BROWN LIBRARY ON HEAVY PAPER. IT HAS A MdHR # OF MSA SC1399-707 AND AN ACQ. # OF JCB011-GIFT.
