DESCRIPTION : THIS MANUSCRIPT MAP IS IN THE PLANTATIONS OFFICE OF THE BOARD OF TRADE IN LONDON. IT IS CLOSELY RELATED TO A SECOND MANUSCRIPT MAP IN THE SAME LOCATION COVERING VIRGINIA. NEITHER OF THE MAPS IS SIGNED OR DATED. THE DATING IS BY BLACK AND IS BASED ON A PAYMENT RECORD IN 1677, WHICH IT IS THOUGHT INCLUDES THIS MAP.

THE MARYLAND MANUSCRIPT INCLUDES FROM NORTH OF THE CHESAPEAKE TO WATKINS POINT AND FROM THE NORTH EAST BRANCH OF THE POTOMAC RIVER TO EASTERN NEW JERSEY. IT INCLUDES SOUNDINGS AND SHOALS AND THE LOCATIONS OF HOUSES IN THE MARYLAND AREA. LONGITUDE OR LATITUDE SCALES ARE GIVEN IN EACH BORDER.

TAKEN TOGETHER, THE TWO MANUSCRIPTS CONSTITUTE A VERSION OF THE A. HERRMAN MAP (SEE MAP # 173H5). THERE ARE MANY DIFFERENCES HOWEVER. THE PRINTED MAP HAS MANY ADDITIONAL FEATURES NOT ON THE MANUSCRIPT. THE ORIENTATION OF THE PRINTED MAP IS WITH WEST AT THE TOP, WHILE THE MANUSCRIPTS HAVE NORTH AT THE TOP. BLACK CONCLUDES THAT THE PRINTED MAP WAS NOT COPIED FROM THESE MANUSCRIPTS OR VICE VERSA DIRECTLY. BUT SHE THINKS THE MANUSCRIPT MAPS WERE MADE AFTER THE PRINTED MAP WAS PUBLISHED. THE MAP COULD HAVE BEEN A RECOPYING, POSSIBLY AFTER MORE THAN ONE RECOPYING OF THE HERRMAN MAP IN A FORM COMPILED ABOUT 1668. THE PRINTED MAP WAS COMPLETED BY 1666, THOUGH NOT PUBLISHED UNTIL 1673. THE BOUNDARY DISPUTE ESTABLISHING THE LINE AT WATKINS POINT WAS NEGOTATED IN 1668 AND MARKED BY TREES. THE TREES ARE SHOWN CONSPICUOUSLY ON BOTH MANUSCRIPT MAPS.

BLACK HAS AN EXCELLENT DISCUSSION OF THE BACKGROUND OF THIS MANUSCRIPT AND ALSO OF THE ONE ON VIRGINIA AND, IT IS FROM BLACK THAT THIS DATA WAS TAKEN.

EDITION & STATE INFO : THIS IS A MANUSCRIPT MAP.

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS AN EXCELLENT FULL COLOR FACSIMILE OF THIS MAP PUBLISHED BY THE JOHN CARTER BROWN LIBRARY. IT HAS AN ACQ. # OF JCB016-DHD AND A MDHR # OF G1399-529(REPRO). THE COMPANION MAP OF SOUTHERN MARYLAND, VIRGINIA AND NORTHERN NORTH CAROLINA IS ALSO IN THE COLLECTION IN FULL COLOR FACSIMILE WITH AN ACQ. # OF JCB016-DHD AND A MDHR # OF G1399- 530(REPRO).
