MAP #: 176M5
CARTOGRAPHER : MORDEN, ROBERT & BERRY, WILLIAM [PUBLISHERS]
DATE: 1676
SHORT TITLE : A MAP OF NEW ENGLAND NEW YORKE NEW IERSEY MARY-LAND
REMAINING TITLE & ID : & VIRGINIA SOULD BY ROBERT MORDEN AT Ye ATLAS IN CORN-HILL NEER Ye ROYAL EXCHANGE AND BY WILLIAM BERRY AT Ye GLOBE BETWEEN YORK HOUSE & Ye NEW EXCHANGE IN Ye STRANDE LONDON (RECTANGULAR CARTOUCHE, BOTTOM RIGHT CORNER, AGAINST PICTURE SHOWING INDIANS DOING EVERYDAY TASKS). "GR. KING SCULPSIT." (INSIDE BOTTOM NEAT LINE TO LEFT OF CENTER). "A SCALE OF COMON ENGLISH MILES" (SCALE OF 60 MI.=2 1/2", ABOVE ENGRAVER'S STATEMENT). LONGITUDE (PROBABLY EAST FROM FERRO ISLAND, TOP AND BOTTOM BORDERS). LATITUDE (RIGHT AND LEFT BORDERS).
THE MAP WAS FIRST ADVERTISED IN THE LONDON GAZETTE FOR 14-17 FEBRUARY 1676, A FEW DAYS LATER THAN THE BASSET & CHISWELL EDITION IN 1676 OF JOHN'S SPEED'S MAP "VIRGINIA AND MARYLAND" (SEE MAP # 176A5), CONSIDERED THE FIRST DERIVATIVE MAP BASED ON AUGUSTINE HERRMAN'S WORK.
BLACK INDICATES THAT THE DEPICTION OF NEW JERSEY IS BASED ON THE JANSSON-VISSCHER NOVI BELGII SERIES. HOWEVER, IT IS INTERESTING THAT CAPE HENLOPEN IS SHOWN CORRECTLY AT THE MOUTH OF THE DELAWARE BAY RATHER THAN CAPE CORNELIUS AS IN THE JANSSON-VISSCHER MAPS. SELLER'S "MAPP OF NEW MAPS IN ITS OUTLINES. IT RESEMBLES SELLER'S "A MAPP OF NEW ENGLAND" OF THIS AREA, BUT IS NOT A SLAVISH COPY. SELLER'S MAP WAS ADVERTISED TWO MONTHS AFTER THE MORDEN & BERRY.
NAMES CONNECTED WITH KING PHILIP'S WAR THAT HAD NO SIGNIFICANCE BEFORE JUNE, 1675 WERE USED. THE EARLIEST ACCOUNT OF THIS WAR WAS PUBLISHED WITH THE DATE 1675. SINCE THE PAMPHLET WAS EARLIEST ADVERTISED ON 10 FEBRUARY, 1676, THE NAMES MAY HAVE BEEN BASED ON A MANUSCRIPT COPY OF THAT TEXT.
NO DERIVATIVE COPIES OF THIS MAP OTHER THAN THE LATER STATE OF THE MAP ARE KNOWN.
IT IS UNKNOWN WHO COMPILED THIS MAP. IT MAY HAVE BEEN MORDEN OR BERRY OR POSSIBLY GREGORY KING, WHO SIGNED IT AS THE ENGRAVER. KING HAD TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE IN SURVEYING, MAP-MAKING AS WELL AS ENGRAVING. WHOEVER WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR IT, THIS MAP IS CONSIDERED BY BLACK AN EARLY INSTANCE OF THE ATTEMPTS BY ENGLISH CARTOGRAPAHERS TO ACHIEVE THEIR INDEPENDENCE OF DUTCH MAPS.
ONLY THREE COPIES OF THIS MAP HAVE BEEN LOCATED. THE ONE ON VELLUM IS IN THE JCB LIBRARY. AN UNCOLORED COPY ON PAPER IS IN THE YALE LIBRARY. ANOTHER COPY ON PAPER WITH COLORED BOUNDARIES ADDED IS IN THE JCB. ALL OF THESE EXAMPLES SHOW THE ERASURE OF AN INDECIPHERABLE NAME JUST ABOVE "WARWICK" IN THE RHODE ISLAND AREA, WHICH MAY HAVE BEEN A FALSE START BY THE ENGRAVER ON THE NAME "MOUNT-HOPE".
DATA IS FROM BLACK AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE REPRODUCTION IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.
EDITION & STATE INFO : BLACK IDENTIFIES TWO STATES OF THIS RARE MAP, WHICH DIFFER PRIMARILY AS TO THE MATERIAL ON WHICH THEY WERE PRODUCED AND BY THE ADDITION OF NAMES IN MANUSCRIPT AND OF BORDERS IN COLOR IN THE LATER STATE. BOTH STATES SHOW AN ERASURE IN THE RHODE ISLAND AREA ABOVE "WARWICK", BUT THIS IS THOUGHT TO HAVE BEEN A FALSE START BY KING IN ENGRAVING THE NAME "MOUNT-HOPE".
STATE 1 - (1676) - THIS IS THE MAP DESCRIBED HEREIN. IT IS ON VELLUM. A COPY OF THIS MAP IS IN THE BLATHWAYT ATLAS IN THE JOHN CARTER BROWN LIBRARY.
STATE 2 - (C1681-1686) - THIS STATE WAS PRINTED ON PAPER AND HAS ADDITIONS AND CORRECTIONS MADE IN THE PLANTATIONS OFFICE IN LONDON. THE CORRECTIONS ARE PROBABLY BY WILLIAM BLATHWAYT. THE NAMES OF THE NEW ENGLAND COLONIES AND PROVINCES IN THE COLOR KEY ARE IN THE HAND OF JOHN POVEY, WHO WAS ALSO RESPONSIBLE FOR THE MANUSCRIPT TABLE OF CONTENTS OF THE ATLAS. THE ENGRAVED NAMES OF CONNECTICUT AND MASSACHUSETTS ARE TOO FAR NORTH AND NEW HAMPSHIRE IS UNNAMED. THE INKED CORRECTIONS ATTEMPT TO RECTIFY THESE MISCONCEPTIONS. COPIES ARE IN YALE AND IN THE JOHN CARTER BROWN. SEE MAP # 181M5.
HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS A FULL SIZE REPRODUCTION OF THE ORIGINAL IN THE JOHN CARTER BOWN LIBRARY AT BROWN UNIVERSITY. IT WAS RECEIVED AS A GIFT FROM SUSAN DANFORTH. BELOW THE SCALE IS THE STATEMENT "REPRODUCED FROM THE ORIGINAL IN THE JOHN CARTER BROWN LIBRARY, BROWN UNIVERSITY".
