DESCRIPTION : THIS SMALL MAP IS SIMILAR TO,
ALTHOUGH ON A MUCH SMALLER SCALE THAN, THE SPEED MAP OF VIRGINIA
AND MARYLAND OF 1676 (SEE MAP # 176S5). IT WAS IN SPEED'S A
PROSPECT OF THE MOST FAMOUS PARTS OF THE WORLD..., LONDON,
PRINTED BY W.G., 1675, ON PAGE 212, WHICH WAS BOUND WITH HIS
ENGLAND, WALES, SCOTLAND AND IRELAND DESCRIBED AND
ABRIDGED...FROM A FARR LARGER VOULUME..., ANNO CUM PRIVILEGIO
1676. VERNER NOTES THAT THIS VOLUME WAS ADVERTISED IN THE TERM
CATALOGUE FOR HILLARY TERM 1676 (I 299) AS SELLING FOR 7s BOUND.
THE MAP DOES NOT APPEAR IN THE EARLIER EDITIONS OF 1631, 1646,
1662, AND 1668, WHICH SABIN INDICATES CONTAIN ONLY A GENERAL
DESCRIPTION AND MAP OF AMERICA. THERE IS NO ENGRAVER STATEMENT ON
THE MAP, BUT PHILLIPS' ENTRY FOR THIS ITEM STATES THAT MANY OF THE
MAPS WERE ENGRAVED BY PIETER VAN DEN KEERE. A COPY OF THE VOLUME
IS IN THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS.
VERNER HAS AN ADDITIONAL ENTRY FOR 1676, SHOWING THAT THE SAME
PLATE AND PROBABLY THE SAME TYPE SETTING WAS USED AS IN THE 1675
EDITION IN A PUBLICATION ENTITLED AN EPITOME OF MR. SPEED'S
THEATRE OF THE EMPIRE OF GREAT BRITAIN AND OF HIS PROSPECT OF THE
MOST FAMOUS PARTS OF THE WORLD, LONDON, THO. BASSET & RIC.
CHISWELL, ON PAGE 211. THE TITLE PAGE IS DIFFERENT. BOTH THE 1675
AND 1676 TITLE PAGES ARE SHOWN IN BAER'S SEVENTEENTH CENTURY
MARYLAND, A BIBLIOGRAPHY, ON 85A AND 85b. COPIES OF THE 1676
PUBLICATION ARE IN THE NEWBERRY LIBRARY, THE CLEMENTS LIBRARY, THE
NEW YORK PUBLIC LIBRARY AND IN THE NEW HAMPSHSIRE HISTORICAL
SOCIETY.
THE MAP'S GEOGRAPHICAL PRESENTATION IS SIMILAR TO SPEED'S MAP OF
VIRGINIA AND MARYLAND IN THE LARGER ATLAS OF 1676 AND ITS NAMES ARE
SIMILAR AS TO SPELLING, EXCEPT THAT THERE ARE FEWER OF THEM BECAUSE
OF THE SIZE OF THE MAP. A PLACE LISTING WITH CORRESPONDING LETTER
SYMBOLS IS GIVEN JUST BELOW THE CARTOUCHE, WHICH PERMITS THE ENTRY
OF 10 MORE PLACE NAMES WITHOUT OVERCROWDING THE MAP. THE
PRESENTATION OF THE HILLS IN WESTERN VIRGINIA AND MARYLAND IS ALSO
SIMILAR. THE LATITUDE MARKINGS FROM 37 THROUGH 40 IN BOTH THE TOP
AND BOTTOM MARGINS ARE THE SAME AND THE TEXT ACCOMPANYING THE MAP
IS IDENTICAL.
DATA IS FROM SWEM, VERNER, PHILLIPS AND CUMMING AND FROM
OBSERVATION OF THE COPY OF THE MAP IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.
EDITION & STATE INFO : ONLY A SINGLE EDITION AND STATE
ARE KNOWN AT THIS TIME, ALTHOUGH THERE WERE TWO ISSUES OF THE MAP,
ONE IN 1675 AND ONE IN 1676.
HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS
A GOOD COPY OF THIS MAP IN BLACK AND WHITE WITH AN ACQ. # OF BB023-
DD1 AND A MDHR # OF G1399-204.
