DESCRIPTION : THIS SMALL SCALE MAP COVERS FROM CAPE HENRY IN THE SOUTH TO NOVA SCOTIA AND HAS AN INSET OF NEWFOUNDLAND. THE DEPICTION OF THE CHESAPEAKE BAY IS RELATIVELY SMALL AND QUITE CRUDE. THE RIVERS ARE SHOWN ALMOST SCHEMATICALLY, WITH THE ENTRANCE TO THE BAY FAR TOO WIDE IN PROPORTION TO THE SCALE OF THE DELMARVA PENINSULA. WHAT IS NOW CAPE HENLOPEN AT THE MOUTH OF THE DELAWARE BAY IS DRAWN AS AN EASTWARD JUTTING POINT. THE NORTHERN BORDER OF MARYLAND, DELINEATED BY DOTTED LINE, IS LOCATED TOO FAR NORTH AND THE EASTERN BORDER IS TOO FAR EAST.

THIS MAP APPEARED IN PART V, FACING PAGE 73, OF RECUEIL DE DIVERS VOYAGES FAITS EN AFRIQUE ET EN L'AMERIQUE..., EDITED BY HENRI JUSTEL, PARIS, CHEZ LOUIS BILLAINE, 4o, 1674. THIS PUBLICATION WAS REPRINTED IN 1684 WITH A NEW TITLE PAGE AND A NEW PUBLISHER, BUT WITH NO CHANGE IN THE MAP. THE MAP WAS ENGRAVED BY R. MICHAULT, WHO WAS AN ENGRAVER FOR DUVAL AND SANSON. THE MAP IS OF NO GREAT HISTORICAL INTEREST FOR THE CHESAPEAKE-MARYLAND AREA. IT IS QUITE INACCURATE OF THAT AREA AT A TIME WHEN THE AUGUSTINE HERRMAN MAP WAS ALREADY COMPLETED. THE MAP IS COPIED DIRECTLY FROM THAT IN RICHARD BLOME'S A DESCRIPTION OF THE ISLAND OF JAMAICA, 1672, AND IN FACT PART V OF JUSTEL'S WORK IS A TRANSLATION FROM ENGLISH INTO FRENCH OF BLOME'S WRITING.

HENRI JUSTEL (1620-1693), BOOK COLLECTOR AND SCHOLAR, WAS A FRENCH PROTESTANT AND THE SECRETARY OF LOUIS XIV. HE FLED FROM FRANCE BEFORE THE REVOCATION OF THE EDICT OF NANTES IN 1685, WENT TO ENGLAND AND SETTLED THERE IN 1681. HE WAS APPOINTED KEEPER OF THE KING'S LIBRARY AT ST. JAMES PALACE BY CHARLES II.

DATA IS FROM BAER, SABIN, TOOLEY'S DICTIONARY AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE COPY IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.

EDITION & STATE INFO : THERE ARE TWO EDITIONS OF THIS MAP, ONE ENGLISH AND THE OTHER FRENCH. THE ENGLISH EDITION IS IN TWO STATES. THE FRENCH EDITION IS IN TWO ISSUES.

1ST ED. - 1ST STATE - (1672) - THIS MAP WAS FIRST PUBLISHED IN RICHARD BLOME'S A DESCRIPTION OF THE ISLAND OF JAMAICA, FACING PAGE 139. THIS WAS PUBLISHED IN LONDON IN 1672, PRINTED BY T. MILBOURN AND SOLD BY J. WILLIAMS, JUNIOR. THE MAP IS ENTITLED "A DRAUGHT OF THE SEA COAST AND RIVERS OF VIRGINIA, MARYLAND, AND NEW ENGLAND. TAKEN FROM THE LATEST SURVEYS. LONDON PRINTED FOR RIC BLOME". IT HAS A DEDICATION IN THE TOP LEFT CORNER TO CAECILIUS CALVERT UNDER THE CALVERT COAT OF ARMS. THE MAP MEASURES 19.8 X 25.3 CM. SEE MAP # 172B5.

-2ND STATE - (1678) - THIS STATE HAS THE SAME TITLE AND DEDICATION AS STATE 1. HOWEVER, THE POSITIONS OF LATITUDES 37-40 HAVE BEEN CHANGED AND RENUMBERED ON THE LEFT HAND MARGIN OF THE PLATE AND THE SUSQUEHANNA RIVER HAS BEEN EXTENDED NORTHWARD. IN THE EARLIER STATE, ONLY THE MOUTH OF THE RIVER WAS SHOWN AT THE HEAD OF THE CHESAPEAKE BAY. THE 40o NORTHERN BOUNDARY LINE OF MARYLAND, SHOWN BY A DOTTED LINE, HAS BEEN RAISED ABOUT ONE-QUARTER OF AN INCH ON THIS MAP. IT WAS PUBLISHED IN THE 1678 REISSUE OF BLOME'S A DESCRIPTION OF THE ISLAND OF JAMAICA, FACING PAGE 63. SEE MAP # 178B5.

2ND ED. - 1ST ISSUE - (1674) - THIS IS THE MAP DESCRIBED HEREIN.

- 2ND ISSUE - (1684) - THE MAP IS SIMILAR TO THAT IN THE FIRST ISSUE OF THE SECOND EDITION OF THIS MAP. IT WAS IN RECUEIL DE DIVERS VOYAGES FAITS EN AFRIQUE ET EN L'AMERIQUE..., EDITED BY HENRI JUSTEL, PARIS, CHEZ LA VEUVE ANT. CELLIER, 1684, FACING PAGE 73, AS IN THE FIRST ISSUE.

DATA IS PRIMARILY FROM BAER.
