DESCRIPTION : VERNER DESCRIBES THIS AS THE EIGHTH DERIVATIVE OF THE 1612 J. SMITH MAP (SEE MAP #112S5). THE PLATE WAS PREPARED BY MEURS FOR THE 1671 DUTCH EDITION OF A. MONTANUS'S DE NIEUWE EN ONBEKENDE WEERELD..., T'AMSTERDAM, J. MEURS,1671. THE PLATE WAS THEN PRINTED FOR OGILBY'S AMERICA... ALSO OF 1671. IT IS NOT KNOWN WHETHER THE PLATES WERE PRINTED IN AMSTERDAM WITH THE MAPS SENT TO LONDON OR WHETHER THE PLATES WERE SENT TO AND PRINTED IN LONDON. COPIES OF OGILBY'S AMERICA... ARE EXTANT WITH THE DATE 1670. OGILBY, LIKE MEURS, INTENDED TO PUBLISH THE WORK IN 1670 BUT, BECAUSE OF A DELAY IN GETTING INFORMATION ABOUT THE BRITISH COLONIES, ACTUALLY DIDN'T PUBLISH UNTIL NOVEMBER, 1671. THE PLATE WAS USED IN 1673 IN THE HIGH GERMAN EDITION OF MONTANUS, WHICH IS ATTRIBUTED TO OLFERT DAPPER. LATER, THE PLATE WAS ACQUIRED BY PIERRE VANDER AA, WHO SO THOROUGHLY ALTERED IT THAT IT WAS NOT RECOGNIZABLE AS THE MEURS PLATE. THE AA PLATE WAS PASSED TO COVENS AND MORTIER, WHO ADDED THEIR IMPRINT AFTER DELETING PART OF THE AA IMPRINT.

THE MEURS PLATE IS A CAREFUL COPY OF THE HONDIUS-BLEAU DERIVATIVE OF THE JOHN SMITH MAP (SEE MAP #118H5), BUT IS SOMEWHAT SMALLER IN SIZE AND MORE DECORATIVE. IN THE TOP RIGHT CORNER IS A "NOTARUM EXPLICATIO" ON A PANEL SURROUNDED BY FIGURES OF ANIMALS INCLUDING A LLAMA AND GOATS AND TWO INDIAN FIGURES, ONE OF WHICH HOLDS A BOW.

DATA IS FROM VERNER, MAP COLLECTOR'S SERIES # 45, PP. 36-37, FROM HIS UNPUBLISHED NOTES ON THE MAPS OF VIRGINIA, AND FROM OBSERVATION OF ALL THREE STATES OF THIS MAP IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.

EDITION & STATE INFO : THERE IS ONE EDITION, WHICH WAS ISSUED IN THREE STATES: THE FIRST BY MONTANUS AND OGILBY FROM 1671-1673; THE SECOND WAS USED BY AA IN 1729; AND THE THIRD BY COVENS AND MORTIER IN 1761.

STATE 1 - (1671-73) - THREE IMPRESSIONS ARE KNOWN, WITH NO PLATE CHANGES. THE WATERMARK ON THE MONTANUS 1671 (IMPRESSION 1) AND 1673 (IMPRESSION 3) PRINTINGS IS A JESTER. THE MARK ON THE OGILBY 1671 (IMPRESSION 2) PRINTING IS A COCKATRICE. NOT ALL PRINTINGS CARRY THESE MARKS. THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS A COPY OF THIS STATE WITH NO WATERMARK. COPIES OF ALL THREE IMPRESSIONS ARE IN THE NYPL. IMPRESSION 1 IS ALSO IN THE NEWBERRY AND # 2 IS IN THE JCB AND HARVARD. THIS IS THE MAP DESCRIBED HEREIN.

STATE 2 - (1729) - THIS IS THE VANDER AA STATE. ALL OF THE ORIGINAL CARTOUCHES, SCALE, TITLE, AND NOTARUM WERE REPLACED BY A SINGLE CARTOUCHE. A NEW SCALE OF GERMAN AND FRENCH LEAGUES IS PROVIDED. LONGITUDE FIGURES ARE ADDED. THREE NEW NAMES IN EASTERN MARYLAND AND SOME OTHER NAMES HAVE BEEN ADDED. THE NAME-DESCRIPTION IN THE CARTOUCHE IN THE TOP RIGHT CORNER READS "VIRGINIE, GRANDE REGION DE L'AMERIQUE SEPTRIONALE, AVEC TOUS SES BOURGS, HAMEAUX, RIVIERES ET BAYES, SUIVANT LES RECHERCHES EXACTES DE CEUX QUI L'ONT DECOUVERTE, ET NOUVELLEMENT MISE AU JOUR PAR PIERRE VANDER AA, MARCHAND LIBRAIRE A'LEIDE." THIS APPEARED IN LA GALERIE AGREABLE DU MONDE..., A'LEIDE, PIERRE VANDER AA, 1729, VOL 63-4, WITH A SCALE OF 1:400,000 ON A MAP 29 X 35 CM. THESE MAPS WERE PRINTED ON UNWATERMARKED PAPER. COPIES ARE IN THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS NEWBERRY, YALE, HARVARD, THE NYPL AND IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION. SEE MAP # 229A5.

STATE 3 - (1761) - THE ONLY CHANGE FROM THE AA STATE IS THAT THE AA IMPRINT HAS BEEN DELETED IN PART AND REPLACED WITH THE FOLLOWING: "A AMSTERDAM CHEZ I COVENS ET C MORTIER. COPIES ARE IN THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS AND IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION. SEE MAP # 261C5.

DATA IS FROM VERNER, MAP COLLECTOR'S SERIES # 45, PP. 36-7.

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS A COPY IN OUTLINE COLORING OF STATE 1 WITH NO WATERMARK, SO POSITIVE IDENTIFICATION OF THE IMPRESSION NUMBER IS IMPOSSIBLE. IT HAS AN ACQ. # OF BB023-UNN AND A MDHR # OF G1399-229. HFC ALSO HAS A COPY OF STATE 2 IN FULL COLOR WITH WIDE MARGINS, WITH AN ACQ. # OF SW015-THN AND A MdHR # OF G1399-549. HFC IN ADDITION HAS A COPY IN OUTLINE COLORING OF THE THIRD STATE, WITH AN ACQ. # OF BB0023-HEN AND A MdHR # OF G1399-246.
