MAP #: 166G5
CARTOGRAPHER : GOOS, PIETER
DATE: 1666
SHORT TITLE : PAS CAERTE VAN NIEU NEDERLANDT EN DE ENGELSCHE VIRGINIES
REMAINING TITLE & ID : VAN CABO COD TOT CABO CANRICK (CARTOUCHE, UPPER LEFT CORNER). THREE SCALES IN DUTCH, SPANISH AND ENGLISH & FRENCH MILES (IN SCALE CARTOUCHE, LOWER RIGHT CORNER, SHOWING FIGURES HOLDING A SOUNDING LEAD, CHAIN, DIVIDERS AND OTHER NAVIGATIONAL INSTRUMENTS). TWO COMPASS ROSES AND TWO SHIPS ARE SHOWN (IN THE OCEAN PORTION OF THE CHART). THERE IS NOTHING ON THE REVERSE SIDE. LONGITUDE (NOT SHOWN). LATITUDE (RIGHT AND LEFT BORDERS).
LATER ISSUES WERE PUBLISHED IN 1667 (IN GOOS' L'ATLAS DE LA MER), 1668 (IN GOOS' THE SEA-ATLAS OR THE WATTER WORLD, AND IN HIS DE ZEE-ATLAS), 1669 (IN GOOS' DE ZEE-ATLAS OFTE WATER-WERELD), 1670 (IN GOOS' THE SEA-ATLAS OR THE WATTER-WORLD AND IN HIS L'ATLAS DE LA MER), 1672 (IN GOOS' DE ZEE-ATLAS OFTE WATER WERELD), AND IN 1683 (VERNER NOTES THAT THE PLATE OF THIS CHART WAS USED BY ROBIJN IN HIS ZEE ZEA ATLAS AQUATICA DEL MAR, AMSTERDAM, 1683, WITHOUT ANY CHANGE IN THE PLATE).
KOEMAN THINKS THE GOOS SEA ATLAS WAS INTENDED FOR THE BOOK LOVER RATHER THAN FOR THE SEAMAN. IT IS ALWAYS ELABORATELY COLORED. GOOS' SEA ATLAS WAS COPIED BY JOHN SELLER IN 1670. COPIES OF GOOS' SEA ATLAS WERE PUBLISHED WITH DUTCH, FRENCH AND ENGLISH TEXTS.
THE REPRESENTATION OF THE CHESAPEAKE BAY AREA IS TAKEN FROM SMITH'S MAP (SEE MAP # 112S5) WITH MANY OF HIS NAMES. THE RIVERS FLOWING INTO THE BAY ARE MOSTLY SHOWN SCHEMATICALLY ONLY BY INDENTATIONS, EXCEPT FOR THE JAMES (CALLED THE POUHATAN) AND THE POTOMAC (SPELLED PATAWOMECK). THE JAMES IS MUCH TOO WIDE IN RELATION TO THE OTHERS. THE ENTIRE DELMARVA PENINSULA AND ALL OF PRESENT MARYLAND IS ENTITLED "VIRGINIA". NO SOUNDINGS ARE GIVEN, ALTHOUGH SHOALS ARE INDICATED BY DOTTED LINES.
DATA IS FROM KOEMAN, VERNER, PHILLIPS AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE COPIES OF BOTH EDITIONS IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.
EDITION & STATE INFO : THERE ARE AT LEAST TWO EDITIONS OF THIS MAP, OF WHICH THIS IS THE SECOND. THE DIFFERENCES ARE SOLELY IN THE DECORATION AND IN THE SCALE CARTOUCHE.
ED. 1 - (1661) - PUBLISHED BYT JOHANNES & GIELES VAN LOON, THE MAP IS ENTITLED "PAS CAERTE VAN NIEV NEDERLANDT EN DE ENGELSCHE VIRGINIES; VAN CABO COD, TOT CABO CANRICK. t'AMSTERDAM, BY IOHANNES VAN LOON, PLAETSNYDER EN ZEE: CAERTMAECKER." THIS EDITION HAS THREE SCALES, BUT NO SCALE CARTOUCHE IN THE LOWER RIGHT CORNER. THE TWO SHIPS SHOWN IN THE OCEAN AREA ARE SMALLER THAN THOSE OF THE SECOND EDITION. SEE MAP #161L5.
ED. 2 - (1666) - ENTITLED "PAS CAERTE VAN NIEU NEDERLANDT EN DE ENGELSCHE VIRGINIES VAN CABO COD TOT CABO CANRICK.", THIS CHART DOES NOT GIVE GOOS' NAME. IT ADDS A SCALE CARTOUCHE IN PLASTERWORK AT THE LOWER RIGHT, WITH FIGURES HOLDING NAVIGATIONAL GEAR. THE FIGURES IN THE TITLE CARTOUCHE ARE REVERSED. THIS IS THE MAP DESCRIBED HEREIN.
DATA IS FROM PERSONAL OBSERVATION OF THE MAPS IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.
HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : HFC HAS A BEAUTIFUL COPY OF THIS SECOND EDITION ON THICK PAPER WITH THE CARTOUCHES AND DECORATIONS IN COLOR AND THE GEOGRAPHY IN OUTLINE COLOR. IN ADDITION, HFC ALSO HAS A BEAUTIFUL COPY IN OUTLINE COLORING OF EDITION 1. IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO IDENTIFY WHICH ISSUE IT IS, SINCE ALL THE ISSUES WERE IDENTICAL. IT HAS AN HFC ACQ. # OF A018-NG2 AND A MdHR # OF G1399-163.
