MAP #: 161L5
CARTOGRAPHER : LOON, JOHANNES VAN
DATE: 1661
SHORT TITLE : PASCAERTE VAN NIEV-NEDERLAND EN DE ENGELSCHE VIRGINIES;
REMAINING TITLE & ID : VAN CABO COD, TOT CABO CANRIK. 'T AMSTERDAM, BY IOHANNES VAN LOON, PLAETSNYDER EN ZEE: CAERTMAECKER. (CARTOUCHE, UPPER LEFT CORNER, SURROUNDED ON BOTH SIDES WITH TWO STANDING NATIVES). THREE SCALES IN DUTCH, SPANISH AND ENGLISH & FRENCH MILES (LOWER RIGHT CORNER, WHICH APPEAR TO HAVE BEEN ADDED AFTER THE RHUMB LINES WERE ENGRAVED). "33" (LOWER RIGHT CORNER INSIDE NEAT LINES). COMPASS ROSES (BOTTOM CENTER AND RIGHT, BELOW CENTER). THERE IS NOTHING ON THE REVERSE SIDE. LONGITUDE (NOT SHOWN). LATITUDE (RIGHT AND LEFT BORDERS).
THIS CHART FIRST APPEARED AS MAP #33 IN JOHANNES VAN LOON'S KLAER LICHTENDE NOORT-STER OFTE ZEE-ATLAS, THE FIRST EDITION OF WHICH APPEARED IN 1661, CONTAINING 35 CHARTS, THE FIRST 34 OF WHICH HAD ENGRAVED NUMBERS IN THE RIGHT LOWER CORNER. IN 1666, THE PLATES WERE SOLD TO JOHANNES JANSSONIUS VAN WAESBERGEN, WHO SOLD THE ATLAS IN PARTNERSHIP WITH VAN LOON. AN ADDITIONAL 12 CHARTS, SIGNED BY BOTH VAN LOON AND VAN WAESBERGEN WERE INCLUDED IN THE 1666 EDITION. ANOTHER EDITION OF THE CHART APPEARS TO HAVE BEEN MADE BY PIETER GOOS FOR INCLUSION IN HIS SEA ATLAS OF 1666. SEE MAP # 166G5. AFTER 1681, CASPARUS LOOTSMAN DELETED VAN LOON'S NAME AND SUBSTITUTED HIS OWN ADDRESS ON FIVE OF THE PLATES (APPARENTLY THIS MAP WAS NOT ONE OF THEM). A NUMBER OF CHARTS FROM VAN LOON'S SEA ATLAS WERE INCORPORATED IN THE ZEESPIEGEL OF CASPARUS LOOTSMAN IN 1705.
VAN LOON'S SEA ATLAS APPEARED SHORTLY AFTER HENDRIK DONCKER'S SEA ATLAS (FIRST EDITION 1659). VAN LOON'S CHART OF NEW NETHERLANDS IS A MUCH MORE ACCURATE ONE THAN DONCKER'S AND IS BASED ON SMITH. VAN LOON'S ATLAS APPEARED TWO YEARS LATER THAN DONCKER'S, BUT DID NOT LAST AS LONG AS DONCKER'S.
THE DATE OF VAN LOON'S BIRTH IS UNKNOWN. HE IS THOUGHT TO HAVE LIVED UNTIL 1686. HIS NAME WAS INCLUDED IN THE TITLE OF THE SEA MIRROR, PUBLISHED BY THEUNIS JACOBSZ IN 1649. HE WAS THE CO-AUTHOR OF THE SECOND PART OF THE SEA MIRROR, DATED 1643. HE CONTRIBUTED TO THE JOHANNES JANSSONIUS PILOT BOOKS OF 1650, 1651/2, AND 1654 AND CUT THE PLATES FOR HIS 1660 CELESTIAL ATLAS.
DATA IS FROM KOEMAN.
EDITION & STATE INFO : TWO EDITIONS ARE KNOWN TO WRITER. IN THE FIRST, THE ISSUES THRU 1668 WERE EXAMINED AND ARE IDENTICAL EXCEPT FOR THE MANUSCRIPT CHANGE IN PAGE # ON ISSUE 5 AS NOTED BELOW. DATA IS FROM KOEMAN,IV, PP. 406-8 AND FROM EXAMINATION OF ISSUES 1,5, AND 7 FROM THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS. THE SECOND EDITION WAS PUBLISHED BY PIETER GOOS IN 1666.
EDITION 1 -
ISSUE 1 - (1661) - CHART #33 OF 35 CHARTS IN KLAER LICHTENDE NOORT-STER OFTE ZEE ATLAS, JOANNES VAN LOON, AMSTERDAM, 1661. THIS IS THE CHART DESCRIBED.
ISSUE 2 - (1666?) - SAME SEA ATLAS, EXPANDED TO 36 CHARTS.
ISSUE 3 - (1666) - SAME SEA ATLAS, CONTAINING 34 CHARTS, SOLD BY WILHEMUS GOEREE.
ISSUE 4 - (1666) - SAME SEA-ATLAS (TITLE CHANGED FROM "STER" TO "STAR" IN THIS AND SUBSEQUENT EDITIONS), CONTAINING 39 CHARTS. KOEMAN NOTES THAT THIS EDITION WAS PROBABLY PRODUCED SHORTLY AFTER THE SALE OF THE PLATES TO VAN WAESBERGEN.
ISSUE 5 - (1666) - SAME SEA-ATLAS, CONTAINING 47 CHARTS. THIS CHART NOW APPEARS AS #46. THE LC COPY IS IDENTICAL TO ISSUE 1. IT STILL HAS "33" IN THE LOWER RIGHT CORNER, BUT THAT NUMBER WAS BEEN LINED OUT AND "46" WRITTEN IN MANUSCRIPT BELOW. KOEMAN INDICATES THAT THIS ISSUE IS ON HEAVY PAPER WITH ALL CHARTS BEAUTIFULLY COLORED.
ISSUE 6 - (1667) - SAME SEA-ATLAS, PUBLISHED JOINTLY BY VAN WAESBERGEN AND VAN LOON AND SOLD BY GOEREE, CONTAINING 40 CHARTS.
ISSUE 7 - (1668) - SAME SEA-ATLAS, PUBLISHED JOINTLY BY VAN WAESBERGEN AND VAN LOON AND SOLD BY GOEREE,CONTAINING 47 CHARTS.THE LC COPY IS LIKE ISSUE 1.
ISSUE 8 - (1668) A VARIANT OF ISSUE 7 WITH SOME PAGE NUMBERS CHANGED. A COPY HAS NOT BEEN EXAMINED.
ISSUE 9 - (1676) - SAME SEA ATLAS WITH 50 CHARTS.
ISSUE 10 - (1706) - SAME SEA ATLAS ENTITLED KLAER LICHTENDE NOORT-STAR OFTE ZEEATLAS... 1706". THIS ISSUE WAS ILLUMINATED BY THE ARTIST DIRK JANSZ VAN ZANDEN, ONE OF THE MOST FAMOUS MAP DECORATORS IN AMSTERDAM.
EDITION 2 -
ISSUE 1 - (1666) - THIS EDITION WAS PUBLISHED BY PIETER GOOS IN HIS SEA ATLAS IN 1666. LATER EDITIONS OF THE SEA-ATLAS WERE PUBISHED THROUGH 1683. KOEMAN DOES NOT NOTE ANY CHANGES IN THE CHART IN ALL THE ATLAS COPIES HE EXAMINED. GOOS' SEA ATLAS WAS COPIED BY JOHN SELLER IN 1670 AND WE DO NOT KNOW, BUT ASSUME, THAT THIS WAS FROM A DIFFERENT PLATE. COPIES OF GOOS' SEA ATLAS WERE PUBLISHED WITH DUTCH, FRENCH AND ENGLISH TEXTS. WE DO NOT KNOW WHETHER THERE WAS A CHANGE IN THE PLATE IN THESE VARIOUS ISSUES. THE ONLY IMPORTANT CHANGE FROM EDITION ONE OF THIS CHART IS IN THE DECORATION IN THE ATLANTIC OCEAN. THE GOOS EDITION HAS DECORATION SURROUNDING THE SCALE CARTOUCHE. THAT CARTOUCHE IS MISSING IN THE VAN LOON. IN THE TITLE CARTOUCHE, EVERYTHING AFTER "... CABO CANRIK" IS MISSING IN THIS SECOND EDITION. SEE MAP # 166G5.
DATA IS MOSTLY FROM KOEMAN AND FROM PERSONAL OBSERVATION.
HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : HFC HAS A BEAUTIFUL COPY IN OUTLINE COLORING OF THIS FIRST EDITION. SINCE THE VARIOUS ISSUES OF THIS MAP ARE IDENTICAL, IT IS NOT POSSIBLE TO IDENTIFY THE ISSUE OWNED. HFC ALSO HAS A BEAUTIFUL COPY OF THE SECOND EDITION ON THICK PAPER WITH THE CARTOUCHE AND DECORATION IN COLOR AND THE GEOGRAPHY IN OUTLINE COLOR. IT HAS AN HFC ACQ. # OF CH016-HGUE AND A MdHR # OF G1399-474.
