DESCRIPTION : THIS IS A TYPICAL DUTCH SEA CHART OF THE SECOND HALF OF THE 17TH CENTURY. IT COVERS FROM BOSTON TO SOUTH OF CAPE HENRY, INCLUDING ALL OF THE CHESAPEAKE BAY. IT IS RELATIVELY CRUDE AND LACKS DETAIL. THE BAY IS DEPICTED AS AN ELONGATED OVAL. RIVERS FEEDING THE BAY, WHERE THEY ARE SHOWN, ARE ALMOST SCHEMATIC, EXCEPT FOR THE JAMES, WHICH IS FAR TOO WIDE IN PROPORTION TO THE OTHERS. A FEW SHOALS ARE GIVEN IN SKETCHY FORM, WITHOUT SOUNDINGS. THE DELMARVA PENINSULA HAS THE CHARACTERISTIC BULGE OF THE SMITH REPRESENTATION. ONE CAN EASILY APPRECIATE THE PROBLEM OF NAVIGATING, BASED ON CHARTS OF THIS NATURE. ALTHOUGH DONCKER'S WORK, ACCORDING TO KOEMAN, IS CONSIDERED THE MOST CURRENT OF THE PERIOD BECAUSE HE CORRECTED AND UPDATED HIS CHARTS MORE CONSISTENTLY THAN MOST OF HIS COMPETITORS, THIS PARTICULAR EXAMPLE IS FAR LESS ACCURATE AND SOPHISTICATED IN ITS NOMENCLATURE THAN ANOTHER BY VAN LOON IN 1661 (SEE MAP # 161L5). STOKES INDICATES THAT DONCKER'S CHART IS A REPRINT WITH SOME MODIFICATIONS AND CHANGES OF ARNOLD COLOM'S CHART ENTITLED "PASCAARTE VAN NIEU NEDERLANDT UYTGEGEVEN DOOR ARNOLD COLOM. t'AMSTERDAM OPT WATER BY DE NIEUWE BRUGH IN DE LICHTENDE COLOM.", DONE PROBABLY IN 1653 OR BEFORE. IT WAS MAP NO. 16 IN COLOM'S ZEE-ATLAS. STOKES ALSO INDICATES THAT IT WAS REPRINTED BY THEUNIS JACOBSZ IN 1653. SINCE JACOBSZ DIED IN 1650, IT MUST HAVE BEEN REPRINTED BY HIS WIFE IN HIS NAME, SINCE SHE TOOK OVER THE BUSINESS ON HIS DEATH.

THE CHART APEARS AS #18 IN DONCKER'S SEA-ATLAS IN 1660 IN BOTH DUTCH AND ENGLISH. IT IS THE FIRST OF THREE SEPARATE CHARTS OF NEW NETHERLANDS ISSUED BY DONCKER BETWEEN 1660 AND 1688 AND THE ONLY ONE ISSUED WHEN THE DUTCH ACTUALLY HAD POSSESSION OF THE COLONY. THE MAP ALSO IS IN THE 1665 EDITION AS MAP #27 (COPY IS IN THE L.C.), THE 1666 EDITION (COPY IN THE L.C.), THE 1670 EDITION (COPY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA), THE 1676 EDITION (VERNER CITES A REFERENCE IN HUMPHREYS, P. 42, BUT DIDN'T LOCATE A COPY) AND IN THE 1697 EDITION (ALSO CITES HUMPHREYS, P. 42 WITHOUT LOCATING A COPY). A SEARCH OF THE L.C. INDICATED THAT THE PLATE WAS UNCHANGED, AT LEAST THROUGH 1666. THE SEA-ATLAS WAS PUBLISHED IN EXPANDED AND UPDATED VERSIONS INTO THE 18TH CENTURY, FIRST BY DONCKER AND THEN BY HIS SON.

DATA IS FROM PERSONAL OBSERVATION, FROM KOEMAN AND FROM VERNER.

EDITION & STATE INFO : A DETAILED STUDY OF EDITIONS AND STATES HAS NOT YET BEEN DONE. A SEARCH OF THE THREE DONCKER SEA-ATLASES DATED 1660,1665, AND 1666 IN THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS HOWEVER, INDICATES THAT THE SAME PLATE WAS USED SUCCESSIVELY WITHOUT CHANGE. STOKES INDICATES THAT THIS MAP IS A REPRINT OF ONE BY ARNOLD COLOM ENTITLED "PASCAARTE VAN NIEU NEDERLANDT UYTGEGEVEN DOOR ARNOLD COLOM. t'AMSTERDAM OPT WATER BY DE NIEUWE BRUGH IN DE LICHTENDE COLOM.", WHICH WAS MAP NO. 16 IN COLOM'S ZEE- ATLAS. HE INDICATES FURTHER THAT THE MAP WAS REPRINTED BY THEUNIS JACOBSZ IN 1653. PRESUMABLY ALL THESE REPRINTINGS WERE DIFFERENT PLATES.

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS AN EXCELLENT COPY OF THIS CHART IN COLOR, WITH AN ACQ. # OF N022-H3 AND A MDHR # OF G1399-201.
