MAP #: 152F5
CARTOGRAPHER : FARRER. VIRGINIA
DATE: 1652
SHORT TITLE : A MAPP OF VIRGINIA
REMAINING TITLE & ID : DISCOUERED TO Ye FALLS, AND IN IT'S LATT:, FROM 35. DEG: & 1/2 NEER FLORIDA, TO .41. DEG: BOUNDS OF NEW ENGLAND (CARTOUCHE, TOP RIGHT). "DOMINA VIRGINIA FARRER COLLEGIT. ARE SOLD BY I. STEPHENSON AT Ye SUNN BELOW LUDGATE. 1651." (BOTTOM CENTER). PORTRAIT OF SIR FRANCIS DRAKE ABOVE NOTE ABOUT HIM (TOP, LEFT OF CENTER). "JOHN GODDARD SCULP:" (BOTTOM LEFT). SCALA MILIARUM (ABOVE CARTOUCHE). MANY PICTURES OF ANIMALS, BIRDS, SEA MONSTERS, TREES, AND SHIPS (THROUGHOUT THE MAP). COMPASS ROSE (LOWER LEFT CORNER). THERE IS NOTHING ON THE REVERSE SIDE. LONGITUDE (NOT SHOWN). LATITUDE (TOP AND BOTTOM BORDERS).
CARTOGRAPHICALLY THE MAP IS OF INTEREST BECAUSE IT GIVES NUMEROUS PLACE NAMES FOR THE FIRST TIME. THE MAP GIVES SHIRES AND COUNTIES AND OTHER DETAILS OF VIRGINIA AND MARYLAND FOR THE FIRST TIME ON ANY MAP, ALTHOUGH SOME OF THE MARYLAND COUNTIES ARE INCORRECT. IT ADDS DETAILS CONCERNING DUTCH, SWEDISH AND OTHER SETTLEMENTS. LONG ISLAND EXTENDS N-S INSTEAD OF E-W.ONE OF FEW CORRECT DELINEATIONS IS THE UNBROKEN RIDGE OF THE APPALACHIANS, EXTENDING TO THE HUDSON INSTEAD OF STOPPING IN THE SOUTH; BUT THE DIRECTION IS IN ERROR IN RUNNING N-S. THE MOST STRIKING FEATURE OF THE MAP IS THE NARROWNESS OF THE NORTH AMERICAN CONTINENT.
THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THIS MAP AND THAT OF SMITH ARE MARKED. THE EASTERN SHORE IS MUCH MORE CUT UP; THE POCOMOKE(UNNAMED) IS TOO BROAD,AND THE NAME RAPPAHANOK SEEMS TO HAVE BEEN APPLIED TO THE NANTICOKE AND NOT TO THE LITTLE CHOPTANK OR FISHING BAY AS SMITH USED IT. CHOPTANK RIVER IS ROUGHLY OUTLINED AND THERE IS A RIVER EMPTYING INTO THE BAY,NOT FAR FROM WORTON PT., WHICH MAY REPRESENT THE CHESTER. THE PRESENT ELK IS INDICATED WITHOUT ANY NAME. THE WESTERN SHORE IS EVEN MORE POORLY DRAWN THAN THE EASTERN SHORE AND GIVES NOTHING BEYOND THE FACT THAT "THE LORD BALTIMORS PLANTATION BEGUN 1635." HOWEVER, WROTH STATES THAT "IT IS ONE OF THE TWO OR THREE MOST INFORMATIVE MAPS OF THAT AREA TO PROCEED FROM THE FIRST HALF OF THE SEVENTEENTH CENTURY". HE NOTES THAT IT CORRECTLY INDICATES THE NORTHEASTERN TWIST OF THE CHESAPEAKE, RECORDED BY JOHN SMITH AND NEGLECTED BY MOST OTHER CARTOGRAPHERS, "IT SHOWS THE TWO BRANCHES OF THE POTOMAC RIVER", AND IT SHOWS THE LOCATION OF NOVA ALBION, A COLONY PROPOSED BY SIR EDMUND PLOWDEN.
THE MAP WAS FIRST ENGRAVED FOR STEPHENSON'S THIRD ED., 1651 OF EDWARD WILLIAMS' VIRGO TRIUMPHANS: OR, VIRGINIA RICHLY AND TRULY VALUED, LONDON,1650. STEPHENSON ALSO PUBLISHED IN 1651 EDWARD BLAND'S DISCOVERY OF NEVV BRITTAINE, SOME COPIES OF WHICH HAVE FARRER'S MAP. VIRGINIA FARRER, DAUGHTER OF JOHN, WHO REMAINED A SPINSTER AND DIED IN 1687, MADE NUMEROUS ADDITIONS TO THE MAP AFTER THE CHANGE OF IMPRINT TO HER NAME WITHIN THE FIRST YEAR OF PUBLICATION. THERE IS SOME CONJECTURE THAT SHE ACTUALLY AUTHORED THE MAP.
DATA IS FROM CUMMING, MATHEWS, PAPENFUSE, WROTH & VERNER.
EDITION & STATE INFO : ONE EDITION AND FIVE STATES ARE KNOWN. VERNER CONCLUDES THAT: 1) COPIES OF THE 1ST TWO EDITIONS OF WILLIAMS WHICH CONTAIN THE MAP ARE LATE GARNERED COPIES OR SOPHICATED ONES; 2) ANY OF THE 1ST 4 STATES OF THE MAP MIGHT PROPERLY BE FOUND WITH THE THIRD ED. OF WILLIAMS AND THAT IT WOULD BE INCOMPLETE WITHOUT THE MAP; 3) THE COPIES OF THE BLAND WITH THE MAP ARE ACCIDENTAL OR SPECIAL COPIES, OR SOPHISTICATED ONES;4) THE PLATE WAS OBTAINED BY OVERTON FROM STEPHENSON OR HIS HEIRS AND WAS USED BY OVERTON UNDER HIS OWN IMPRINT FOR SEPARATELY ISSUED OR ATLAS-BOUND COPIES OF THE MAP. VERNER STATES THAT THE NYPL HAS A MANUSCRIPT OF THIS MAP WHICH IT BELIEVES WAS FARRER'S OWN DRAFT.
