COMPASS ROSE (UPPER LEFT CORNER). THE MAP HAS LONGITUDE AND LATITUDE LINES ON THE MERCATOR PROJECTION COMPLETELY ACROSS THE MAP. THERE IS NOTHING ON THE REVERSE SIDE. LONGITUDE (POSSIBLY EAST FROM FERRO, TOP AND BOTTOM BORDERS). LATITUDE (RIGHT AND LEFT BORDERS).
THE ARCANO DEL MARE WAS ONE OF THE EARLIEST AND RAREST OF MARINE ATLASES, WAS THE FIRST BY AN ENGLISHMAN AND WAS THE FIRST IN WHICH ALL THE MAPS WERE ON THE MERCATOR PROJECTION. THE MS. MAPS ON WHICH THE ATLAS IS BASED ARE IN THE ROYAL LIBRARY OF MUNICH. HIS SEA ATLAS SYNTHESIZES HIS KEEN KNOWLEDGE OF THE SEA. THE ATLAS WAS PROBABLY NOT A COMMERCIAL SUCCESS, BUT IS UNIQUE FOR ITS BEAUTY, INTELLECTUAL FORCE AND HIGHLY ORNAMENTAL AND DECORATIVE LETTERING.
SIR ROBERT DUDLEY (ALSO DUKE OF NORTHUMBERLAND, EARL OF WARWICK) LIVED FROM 1574 TO 1649. HE WAS THE ILLEGITIMATE SON OF THE EARL OF LEICESTER, THE FAVORITE OF ELIZABETH THE FIRST. HE FIRST BECAME A BUCCANEER,SACKING SPANISH TOWNS WITH SIR FRANCIS DRAKE AND VISITING THE NEW WORLD. HE MADE A VOYAGE TO THE WEST INDIES AND GUIANA IN 1594 IN THE "EARWIG" AND THE "BEAR", HIS PILOTS BEING ABRAHAM KENDAL AND JOHN DAVIES.THESE PILOTS SUPPLIED SOME OF THE INFOR- MATION FOR HIS CHARTS AND SOME ALSO PROBABLY CAME FROM HIS BROTHER-IN-LAW, HENRY CAVENDISH, THE NAVIGATOR..DUDLEY WAS FORCED TO LEAVE ENGLAND BECAUSE OF HIS RELIGION AND WENT TO ITALY, WHERE HE TOOK SERVICE WITH COSMOS II, DUKE OF TUSCANY, AND WHERE HIS MAPS WERE PUBLISHED IN ITALIAN RATHER THAN IN HIS NATIVE TONGUE.
DATA IS FROM STOKES, CUMMING, PHILLIPS ATLASES, AND HUMPHREYS.
EDITION & STATE INFO : THERE ARE TWO EDITIONS OF THE ARCANO DEL MARE (1646-7 AND 1661), BUT THE SAME PLATE APPEARS TO HAVE BEEN USED WITH A SLIGHT MODIFICATION. THE SECOND ATLAS EDITION WAS PUBLISHED 12 YEARS AFTER DUDLEY'S DEATH AT THE INITIATIVE OF LUCINI AND HIS ASSOCIATE IACOPO BAGNANI.
STATE 1-(1646-7)- THE COPY IS AS DESCRIBED. COMPLETE COPIES OF THE 1646-7 ATLAS IN WHICH IT APPEARED ARE IN THE L.C., CLEMENTS, AND HARVARD. IN THIS EDITION, THE MAPS WERE IN UNEQUAL SIZES.
STATE 2-(1661)- THE ONLY CHANGE IN THE PLATE IS THE ADDITION OF "L.o6.o" (LIBRO SESTO) TO THE CARTOUCHE TITLE UNDER "CARTA.III." THE 1661 ATLAS ED. IN WHICH THIS STATE APPEARED HAD MAPS OF EQUAL FORMAT CONTAINING SIX BOOKS USUALLY BOUND IN 2 VOLUMES. COMPLETE COPIES OF THE ATLAS ARE IN THE NYP LIBRARY, YALE, BRITISH MUSEUM, BIBLIOTHEQUE DU DEPOT DES CARTES DE LA MARINE IN PARIS, BIBLIOTECA NAZIONALE, ETC.
HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : HFC HAS A GOOD COPY OF STATE 1 IN BLACK AND WHITE WITH WIDE MARGINS AND A COPY OF STATE 2 IN BLACK AND WHITE IN PRISTINE CONDITION WITH WIDE MARGINS. STATE 2 HAS AN HFC ACQ. # OF A020-T3 AND A MdHR # OF G1399-248. (SEE MAP # 161D5).
