DESCRIPTION : THIS MAP OF THE AREA FROM
VIRGINIA TO FLORIDA INCLUDES THE SOUTHERN PART OF THE CHESAPEAKE
BAY. CUMMING INDICATES THAT THIS MAP IS BASED ON THE MERCATOR MAP
OF 1606, PUBLISHED BY HONDIUS, ENTITLED "VIRGINIAE ITEM ET FLORIDAE
AMERICAE", IN GERARD MERCATOR'S ATLAS...AUCTUS AC ILLUSTRATUS A
JUDOCO HONDIO, AMSTERDAM, 1606, No. 143. THE NORTHERN PART OF
THE MERCATOR MAP WAS BASED ON THE JOHN WHITE MAP OF 1590 (SEE MAP
# 090W5). THE MORE SOUTHERLY PART IS BASED ON THE LE MOYNE MAP OF
1591. THE BLAEU DERIVATIVE, DESCRIBED HEREIN, WAS SLIGHTLY LARGER
AND INCORPORATED NEW GEOGRAPHICAL MATERIAL. THE CHESAPEAKE BAY IS
CHANGED FROM A SMALL BAY TO ITS PROPER SHAPE. "JAMES TOWN" IS
ADDED AS ARE A NUMBER OF INDIAN NAMES. THE BLAEU MAP FIRST APPEARED
IN W.J. AND J. BLAEU'S LE THEATRE DV MONDE OU NOVVEL ATLAS,
AMSTERDAMI, 1640. SUBSEQUENT ATLASES HAVING THE MAP WERE ISSUED BY
THE SAME PUBLISHERS THROUGH 1645 AND THEN BY J. BLAEU UP THROUGH
1667. F. DE WIT ALSO PUT OUT ATLASES WITH THE MAP THROUGH 1708.
JAN JANSSON ISSUED A NEARLY IDENTICAL MAP IN 1641, BUT A DIFFERENT
PLATE WAS USED. THE JANSSON DERIVATIVE WAS PUBLISHED IN HIS
NIEUWEN ATLAS. DERDE DEEL: DES NIEUWEN ATLANTIS AENBANG.
AMSTERDAMI, 1642-1644. THE MAP APPEARED IN MANY JANSSON ATLASES
THROUGH 1675, AND THE PLATES WERE ALSO USED BY JOHN SELLER, CAREL
ALLARD AND VALK AND SCHENK, UP THROUGH 1710.
DATA IS PRIMARILY FROM CUMMING.
EDITION & STATE INFO : THE EDITION AND STATE DATA HAS
NOT BEEN RESEARCHED. HOWEVER, CUMMING LISTS NUMEROUS ATLASES IN
WHICH THIS MAP APPEARED. (SEE CUMMING, #41 PP. 137-138). VERNER'S
[UNPUBLISHED] NOTES ON THE MAPS OF VIRGINIA LIST THE DATES,
LANGUAGES, SIGNATURES, CATCHWORDS, PAGE #s, AND FOLIO #s FOR THE
VARIOUS PUBLICATIONS OF THIS MAP FROM 1640 TO 1667.
