DESCRIPTION : THIS MAP IS LISTED BY VERNER AS DERIVATIVE #6 OF THE JOHN SMITH MAP (SEE MAP #112S5). THIS ABSURD LITTLE MAP IS ONE OF THE CURIOSITIES OF VIRGINIA CARTOGRAPHY. IT DISPLAYS LITTLE CONCERN FOR GEOGRAPHICAL ACCURACY OR EVEN CARE OR ATTENTION IN COPYING. THIS MAP WAS INTENDED FOR INCLUSION IN HISTORIA MUNDI: OR MERCATOR'S ATLAS... ENGLISHED BY W.S. (WYE SALTENSTALL), LONDON, PRINTED BY T COATES (COOTES?) FOR MICHAEL SPARKE AND SAMUEL CARTWRIGHT, 1635. HOWEVER, THE MAP WAS NOT ACTUALLY READY WHEN THE VOLUME WAS PRINTED. ON THE ERRATA LEAF AT THE END OF THE VOLUME IS THE FOLLOWING NOTE: "IN PAGE 905 FOR THE DESCRIPTION OF NEW SPAINE READ NEW VIRGINIA, BUT THERE IS NO MAP OF VIRGINIA IN REGARD THERE IS A MORE EXACT DRAWING IN THAT COUNTRY, WHOSE PLATFORME IS NOT YET COME OVER, BUT WHEN IT COMES, EVERY BUYER OF THE BOOKS SHALL HAVE IT GIVEN HIM GRATIS".

MOST OF THE ATLAS COPIES WERE ISSUED WITH SIMPLY A DUPLICATE OF NEW SPAIN IMPRESSED OPPOSITE THE TEXT TO VIRGINIA. SOMETIMES AN ALTERED COPY OF THE MAP OF NEW ENGLAND FROM SMITH'S VIRGINIA IS SUBSTITUTED. THE HALL MAP IS FOUND IN ALL EDITIONS OF THE ATLAS PUBLISHED IN 1635, 1637 AND 1639.

THERE ARE THREE ILLUSTRATIONS THAT ARE BAD COPIES OF THOSE FOUND IN DE BRY. IN THE UPPER LEFT IS THE SCENE OF THE INDIANS SITTING AROUND A FIRE BEFORE A CHIEF. IN THE UPPER RIGHT CORNER IS A VIEW OF THE INTERIOR OF AN INDIAN HUT SHOWING BODIES LYING SIDE BY SIDE. IN THE BOTTOM RIGHT CORNER IS A BIRD'S-EYE VIEW OF A STOCKADED VILLAGE. ANIMALS, INDIANS, BOATS, CANOES, MONSTERS, HOUSES, HUTS AND CASTLES ARE SHOWN SPREAD THROUGHOUT THE MAP.

DATA IS FROM VERNER'S UNPUBLISHED NOTES ON THE MAPS OF VIRGINIA, HIS MCS # 45, P.35 AND FROM PHILLIPS MAPS OF VIRGINIA.

EDITION & STATE INFO : ONLY ONE EDITION OF THE MAP IS KNOWN AND IT APPARENTLY WAS USED IN ALL THREE EDITIONS OF THE ATLAS HISTORIA MUNDI WITHOUT ALTERATION TO THE PLATE. VERNER NOTES THAT COPIES OF THE 1635 EDITION OF THE ATLAS ARE FOUND WITHOUT THE MAP, BUT WHERE IT IS PRESENT IT IS USUALLY CLOSELY TRIMMED AND PASTED OVER THE DUPLICATED MAP OF NEW SPAINE ON P. 905.

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : HFC'S COPY IS ON THIN PAPER WITH SMALL BORDERS BEYOND THE PLATE. SINCE NO PLATE ALTERATIONS WERE MADE DURING ITS USE, IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO TELL EXACTLY ON WHAT DATE THE MAP IMPRESSION WAS PRINTED. THERE IS NO WATERMARK.
