DESCRIPTION : THIS IS THE BASIC PROTOTYPE MAP FOR THE AREA FROM CAPE FEAR TO NOVA SCOTIA, ACCORDING TO VERNER. THE DEPICTION OF THE CHESAPEAKE BAY IS DERIVED FROM SMITH'S MAP, BUT BECAUSE OF AN ERROR IN LONGITUDE, LAET MADE THE DELMARVA PENINSULA MUCH TOO WIDE. ONLY A FEW OBSCURE COASTAL SETTLEMENTS ARE NAMED IN THE VIRGINIA AREA. THE MAP MAY HAVE BEEN THE BASIS FOR THE VISSCHER MAP OF THE NORTHEASTERN COAST OF NORTH AMERICA ENTITLED "NOVA BELGII NOVAE ANGLIAE, NEC NON PARTIS VIRGINIAE TABULA.....", ACCORDING TO L.C. WROTH AND VERNER. THIS MAP WAS COPIED ON A LARGER SCALE IN 1636 BY JOHANNES JANSSON (SEE MAP # 136J5).

LAET'S MAP APPEARED IN 1630 IN HIS NIEUVVE WERELDT OFTE BESCHRIJVINGHE VAN WEST-INDIEN, TWEEDE DRUCK, LEYDEN, BETWEEN PAGES 88 AND 89. PHILLIPS NOTES THAT THE MAP DID NOT APPEAR IN THE 1625 EDITION OF THIS WORK. IN 1633 IT WAS PUBLISHED IN LAET'S NOVVS ORBIS SEN DESCRIPTIONIS INDIAE OCCIDENTALIS. LIBRI XVII, LVGD, BATAV., NO. 4, OPP. P. 63. IT WAS LAST PUBLISHED IN 1640 IN LAET'S L'HISTOIRE DE NOUVEAU MONDE, LEYDEN, OPP. P. 67. STOKES, ON P. 88 OF HIS ICONOGRAPHY, SAYS THAT IN THE PREFACE TO DE LAET'S WORK, LAET NOTES THAT THE MAPS WERE COMPOSED AND DRAWN BY HESSEL GERRITSZ.

DATA IS FROM CUMMING, STOKES, PHILLIPS AND VERNER.

EDITION & STATE INFO : THIS INFORMATION HAS NOT YET BEEN RESEARCHED. HOWEVER,JOHANNES JANSSON PUBLISHED MAPS TAKEN DIRECTLY FROM THE MAP DESCRIBED HEREIN IN 1636 UNDER THE SAME TITLE AND IN 1647 UNDER THE TITLE NOVA BELGICA ET ANGLIA NOVA. A LATER STATE OF THIS LATTER MAP WAS AGAIN PUBLISHED AROUND 1710 BY VALK & SCHENK WITH THE NOVA BELGICA TITLE. WRITER IS UNAWARE OF ANY OTHER EDITIONS OF THE LAET MAP.

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS A GOOD BLACK AND WHITE COPY WITH FULL MARGINS.
