DESCRIPTION : THIS IS STATE 2 OF THE JODOCUS HONDIUS JR. MAP OF THE SAME NAME DATED 1618. WHICH IS THE FIRST DERIVATIVE OF THE JOHN SMITH MAP OF 1612 (SEE MAP # 112S5), ACCORDING TO VERNER. IT LACKS LONGITUDE AND VARIOUS NAMES ADDED IN LATER STATES OF THE SMITH MAP. THE INSET IN THE TOP LEFT CORNER IS UNDATED. THE ROYAL COAT OF ARMS AS ON THE SMITH MAP IS PRESENT BUT THE GARTER BELT SURROUNDING IT LACKS THE MOTTO FOUND ON SMITH. THIS STATE OF THE FIRST DERIVATIVE WAS THE MOST WIDELY CIRCULATED, WHEREAS THE FIRST STATE IS THE RAREST. WILLIAM BLAEU ACQUIRED THE HONDIUS PLATES AFTER HONDIUS' DEATH WHEN HIS ESTATE WAS SOLD IN 1629 AND ALTERED THE PLATE OF THIS MAP TO REFLECT THE NEW OWNERSHIP. BLAEU WAS THE LEADING COMPETITOR TO THE HONDIUS FIRM AT THAT TIME. HE USED THE MAP FIRST IN HIS ATLANTIC APPENDIX IN 1630 AND THEREAFTER IN ALMOST ALL EDITIONS OF THE ATLAS FROM 1630 TO 1667.

DATA IS FROM VERNER'S STUDY IN MCS #45, AND FROM HIS [UNPUBLISHED] NOTES ON THE MAPS OF VIRGINIA.

EDITION & STATE INFO : THERE IS A SINGLE EDITION OF THIS MAP. TWO STATES OF THE EDITION ARE IDENTIFIED BY VERNER:

STATE 1 - (1618-1629) - THIS STATE HAS THE HONDIUS IMPRINT. IT IS KNOWN ONLY BY THE SEPARATE COPIES; IT IS SOMEWHAT LARGER THAN SMITH'S MAP AND THE MOTTO ON THE GARTER BELT SURROUNDING THE ROYAL COAT OF ARMS IS MISSING. THE INSET IN THE TOP LEFT CORNER IS UNDATED. THIS IS THE RAREST OF THE SMITH DERIVATIVES. COPIES ARE IN THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS (2). VERNER INDICATES THAT ONLY 4 COPIES OF THIS STATE ARE KNOWN.

STATE 2 - (1630-C1761)- THE PLATE WAS ALTERED TO REFLECT THE NEW OWNERSHIP IN THE IMPRINT, WHEN BLEAU ACQUIRED THE PLATES ON THE DEATH OF HONDIUS. BLEAU USED THIS MAP IN HIS ATLANTIC APPENDIX (1630) AND THEREAFTER IN VIRTUALLY ALL EDITIONS OF HIS ATLAS. THE IMPRINT IN THIS STATE READS: EX OFFICINA GUILJELMI BLEAUW. SEE MCS # 45, P. 30 TO OBTAIN THE LANGUAGE, SIGNATURE, CATCHWORD, PAGE NOS. AND FOLIO NOS. ASSOCIATED WITH A PARTICULAR

DATE OF PUBLICATION. THE L.C. CATALOG # FOR THIS STATE IS G3880 1630 .B7. THIS IS THE MAP DESCRIBED HEREIN.

DATA IS FROM COOLIE VERNER'S STUDY IN MCS # 45.

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : HFC HAS TWO COPIES OF THIS STATE IN EXCELLENT CONDITION. ONE IS FROM THE 1635 GERMAN ATLAS. THE SIGNATURE IS "B" AND THE CATCHWORD IS "CHAMINS". THE MAP IS IN OUTLINE COLORING, WITH ADDITIONAL COLOR IN THE POWHATAN INSET, IN THE FIGURES AND CARTOUCHES AND IN THE RELIEF SYMBOLS. IT HAS A MDHR # OF G1399-205. HFC ALSO HAS A COPY IN GOOD CONDITION FROM THE 1650 LATIN ATLAS. THE SIGNATURE IS "H" AND THE CATCHWORD IS "PARTE". IT HAS AN HFC ACQ. # OF BB023-UFI AND A MDHR # OF G1399-245.
