MAP #: 124S5
CARTOGRAPHER : SMITH, JOHN
DATE: 1624
SHORT TITLE : OULD VIRGINIA
REMAINING TITLE & ID : (ON THE FACE OF THE MAP IN THE UPPER LEFT CORNER). [VERNER NOTES THAT THIS MAP IS GENERALLY KNOWN BY THIS TITLE, BUT THAT THE ACTUAL TITLE, WHICH FOLLOWS THIS NOTE, IS IN THE CARTOUCHE IN THE UPPER RIGHT.] "A DESCRIPTION OF PART OF THE ADVENTURES OF CAP: SMITH IN VIRGINIA." (RECTANGULAR BOX IN THE TOP RIGHT CORNER). "GRAVEN AND EXTRACTED OUT OF Ye GENERALL HISTORY OF VIRGINIA, NEW ENGLAND, AND SMER ILES, BY ROBERT VAUGHAN" (BELOW THE NEAT LINE). A SCALE OF 10 LEAGUES (CENTER BOTTOM). TWO COATS OF ARMS (TO RIGHT AND LEFT OF SCALE). LONGITUDE (POSSIBLY EAST FROM FERRO, RIGHT AND LEFT BORDERS). LATITUDE (TOP BORDER).
THE MAP COVERS PRIMARILY THE NORTH CAROLINA-VIRGINIA AREA, BUT, LIKE THE WHITE MAP OF 1590 (SEE MAP 090W5), IT GOES ONLY AS FAR NORTH AS THE ENTRANCE TO THE CHESAPEAKE BAY. ALTHOUGH MANY OF WHITE'S 1590 NAMES ARE RETAINED, NUMEROUS CHANGES WERE MADE AND NAMES WERE GIVEN TO BOTH REAL AND IMAGINED TOPOGRAPHICAL FEATURES. WHITE CALLED THE WHOLE AREA "VIRGINIA". THE MAP HAD VERY LITTLE INFLUENCE ON THE CARTOGRAPHICAL DEVELOPMENT OF THE REGION IT COVERS, SINCE HIS NAMES ON THE MAP WERE NOT USED BY LATER MAP MAKERS. WHEN SMITH'S MAP OF 1612 DESIGNATED A NEW VIRGINIA, THE ORIGINAL AREA DEPICTED BY WHITE BECAME KNOWN AS "OULD VIRGINIA", A NAME WHICH CONTINUED IN USE THROUGH 1646 ON THE DUDLEY CHART.
DATA IS PRIMARILY FROM CUMMING AND VERNER.
