DESCRIPTION : THIS IS A SMALLER SIZE COPY OF THE WYTFLIET MAP OF THE SAME NAME OF 1597 (SEE MAP # 097W5). IT HAS SLIGHT DESIGN DIFFERENCES, BUT IS A CLOSE COPY. THE SAME PLACE NAMES ARE USED IN BOTH MAPS. SINCE THE VILLAGE OF CHESEPIOOC IS MISSPELLED WITH AN INITIAL E RATHER THAN A C, THIS MAP IS BASED ON WYTFLIET'S FIRST STATE OF HIS MAP. THE COAST EXTENDS EAST-WEST LATITUDINALLY. THIS COMPENSATES FOR THE TRUE NORTHEASTERLY COASTAL CONFIGURATION, A FEATURE OF MANY EARLY MAPS OF NEW ENGLAND.

THE MISTAKE OF PUTTING THE CHESAPEAKE BAY NEAR THE ACTUAL LATITUDE OF BOSTON AND OF HAVING THE NEW ENGLAND COASTLINE EXTEND EASTWARD FROM THE CHESAPEAKE BAY IS TAKEN FROM THE CORNELIUS DE JODE MAP OF 1593 (SEE MAP # 093J5). THIS MAP FIRST APPEARED IN JOSE D. ACOSTA'S GEOGRAPHISCHE VND HISTORISCHE BESCHREIBUNG DER UBERAUSS GROSSEN LANDSCHAFFT AMERICA, COLLN, 1598 (SEE MAP # 098M5). CUMMING AND VERNER BOTH LIST THIS MAP UNDER ACOSTA, BUT THE COPY EXAMINED BY THE WRITER HAS THE SAME PLATE DEFECTS AS MAP 098M5 AND PROBABLY SHOULD CORRECTLY HAVE BEEN ATTRIBUTED TO MATAL. ANOTHER ISSUE, APPARENTLY UNCHANGED, APPEARED IN SPECULUM ORBIS TERRAE, COLONIAE AGRIPPINAE 1600-1602. PART IV:AMERICA SIVE NOVVS ORBIS. COLONIAE AGRIPPINAE, 1600, NO. 6.

JEAN MATAL(JOHANNES MATALIUS METELLUS) SPENT MOST OF HIS WORKING LIFE IN LOUVAIN, BUT THE LAST YEARS IN COLOGNE. MATAL LIVED FROM 1520 TO 1597, WHICH WOULD INDICATE THAT HIS DEATH OCCURRED BEFORE THE PUBLICATION OF HIS MAPS IN ACOSTA IN 1598 OR IN ANY OF HIS OWN PUBLICATIONS. HIS LONG STAY IN THE NETHERLANDS INFLUENCED HIS ENGRAVING TECHNIQUE.

DATA IS FROM CUMMING, VERNER, TOOLEY, AND ARKWAY'S CATALOG XXII ON ACOSTA'S GEOGRAPHISCHE.

EDITION & STATE INFO : AT LEAST FIVE ISSUES ARE KNOWN. ONLY THE FIRST TWO HAVE THUS FAR BEEN EXAMINED AND BOTH ARE FROM THE SAME PLATE, WITH NO APPARENT CHANGE. COPIES OF THE MAP, ACCORDING TO CUMMING, ARE AT HARVARD AND THE NYPL, BOTH DATED 1600, IN ADDITION TO THE COPY IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.

1ST ISSUE - (1598) - APPEARED IN ACOSTA'S GEOGRAPHISCHE VND HISTORISCHE BESCHREIBUNG... (SEE MAP # 098A5).

2ND ISSUE - (1600) - NO PLATE CHANGE WAS MADE FROM THE FIRST ISSUE. IT APPEARED IN MATAL'S SPECULUM ORBIS TERRAE. THIS IS THE MAP DESCRIBED. IT HAS ALL THE PLATE DEFECTS OF THE FIRST ISSUE.

3RD ISSUE - (1600) - APPEARED IN MATAL'S AMERICA SIVE NOVVS ORBIS. A COPY HAS NOT YET BEEN EXAMINED FOR DIFFERENCES, IF ANY.

4TH ISSUE - (1601) - APPEARED IN MATAL'S INSULARUM IN 1601. A COPY HAS NOT YET BEEN EXAMINED FOR DIFFERENCES, IF ANY.

5TH ISSUE - (1605) - APPEARED IN ACOSTA'S AMERICA...ODER WEST INDIA, VRSEL, 1605, BOUND AT THE END OF THE VOLUME. AS WITH THE 1598 ISSUE, THERE IS A SINGLE COLUMN OF TEXT IN GERMAN WITH THE TITLE "NORUMBEGA UND VIRGINIA" ON THE REVERSE SIDE. IT HAS A SIGNATURE OF "6" AND THE CATCHWORD "IN". A COPY HAS NOT YET BEEN EXAMINED FOR DIFFERENCES, IF ANY. SEE MAP # 105M5

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : HFC HAS A GOOD CLEAN BLACK AND WHITE COPY OF THIS SECOND ISSUE, WITH WIDE MARGINS. THERE IS A SMALL HOLE MEASURING 1.5 CM. LONG THAT PROJECTS THROUGH THE NEAT LINE INTO THE MAP AT THE TOP CENTERFOLD, WITHOUT LOSS OF DATA. THE HOLE AND THE CENTERFOLD HAVE BEEN SKILLFULLY REPAIRED.
