DESCRIPTION : THIS MAP COVERS MOST OF NORTH AMERICA ABOVE MEXICO. IT ATTEMPTS TO EMBODY THE LATEST AVAILABLE INFORMATION AND, IN THAT RESPECT, IT WAS PROBABLY THE FIRST MAP TO BE INFLUENCED BY LE MOYNE'S MAP OF 1591 COVERING FROM FLORIDA TO CAPE LOOKOUT AND BY WHITE'S MAP OF VIRGINIA. THE VIRGINIA NAMES FROM WHITE'S MAP ARE ERRONEOUSLY PLACED ABOVE "C. DE LAS ARENAS". THIS PUTS THE CHESAPEAKE BAY (CHESEPOC SINUS) NEAR THE ACTUAL LATITUDE OF BOSTON. THE COASTLINE OF NEW ENGLAND (NOROMBEGA) EXTENDS EAST FROM THE CHESAPEAKE BAY. THE MISTAKE OF PLACING VIRGINIA AND THE CHESAPEAKE BAY ABOVE C DE LAS ARENAS IS FOLLOWED BY WYTFLIET (SEE MAP 097W5), MATAL (SEE MAPS # 098M5 AND 100M5) AND QUAD.

IN 1578, GERARD DE JODE PUBLISHED A WORK ENTITLED SPECVLVM ORBIS TERRARUM, CONTAINING SEVERAL MAPS OF THE NEW WORLD. THIS WAS THE SECOND STANDARDIZED ATLAS TO BE PUBLISHED. ALTHOUGH DEJODE BEGAN MAKING MAPS EARLIER THAN ORTELIUS (IN 1555), ORTELIUS WAS THE FIRST TO PUBLISH AN ATLAS (1570). GERARD DIED IN 1591 AFTER HAVING PUBLISHED JUST ONE EDITION AND HIS SON CORNELIUS COMPLETED THE ENLARGED WORK, SPECVLVM ORBIS TERRAE, BY THE INCLUSION OF SEVERAL NEW MAPS AND ADDITIONAL TEXT. THIS MAP IS ONE OF THE NEW ONES. TWO OF THE LEGENDS GIVE HISTORICAL NOTES ON THE FRENCH AND ENGLISH SETTLEMENTS. THE BOOK WAS PUBLISHED IN THE SECOND EDITION FROM 1593 TO 1613.

DEJODE'S MAPS ARE RARER THAN THOSE OF ORTELIUS, WHOSE ATLAS WAS PUBLISHED IN 42 EDITIONS.

DATA IS FROM CUMMING AND ARKWAY XVII, 1981.

EDITION & STATE INFO : AT LEAST TWO STATES OF THIS MAP ARE KNOWN. COPIES OF THE MAP ARE IN THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS (2), JOHN CARTER BROWN, CLEMENTS, NEWBERRY, NEW YORK PUBLIC LIBRARY (STOKES COLLECTION), YALE, AND IN THE COLLECTIONS OF SEYMOUR SCHWARTZ AND OF HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.

1ST STATE - (1593) - IN THE LINE OF TEXT ABOVE THE DOUBLE HORIZONTAL LINES BETWEEN LATITUDE 66 AND 67 IS THE NAME "CAPTAIN LAUDOUNIERO".

2ND STATE - (1593-1613?) - THE NAME "LAUDOUNIERO" HAS BEEN IMPERFECTLY ERASED AND REENGRAVED "RIBALDO". TRACES OF THE OLD NAME ARE STILL CLEARLY VISIBLE.

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS AN EXCELLENT BLACK AND WHITE COPY OF STATE 2 WITH WIDE MARGINS, WITH AN ACQ. # OF WR019-IG2 AND A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-26.
