DESCRIPTION : THIS DOUBLE HEMISPHERIC WORLD MAP INFLUENCED WORLD MAPS FOR A FULL CENTURY. IT IS SIGNIFICANT IN A COLLECTION OF CHESAPEAKE-MARYLAND MAPS BECAUSE IT IS ONE OF THE EARLY PRINTED MAPS ON WHICH THE ENTRANCE TO THE CHESAPEAKE BAY AND THE JAMES AND YORK RIVERS ARE SHOWN. THE NAMING OF THE BAY, HOWEVER, DID NOT OCCUR UNTIL JOHN WHITE'S PRINTED MAP IN 1590 (SEE MAP # 090W5). THE FIRST EDITION OF THIS WORLD MAP APPEARED IN 1587 AND IT WAS INCLUDED IN CASAUBON'S STRABO GEOGRAPHY. THIS REPRESENTATION OF THE BAY IS TAKEN FROM THE JOHN WHITE MANUSCRIPT MAP OF 1585 (SEE MAP # 085W5). THE MAP LATER APPEARED IN MERCATOR'S ATLAS BEGINNING IN 1595. ACCORDING TO KOEMAN, THIS MAP WAS DESIGNED BY RUMOLD MERCATOR, THE SON OF GERARD.

GERARD MERCATOR DIED IN 1594 AND RUMOLD FINISHED HIS ATLAS. AFTER RUMOLD'S DEATH IN 1599, THE ATLAS WAS REISSUED IN 1602. IN 1604, THE PLATES WERE SOLD TO JODOCUS HONDIUS. IN 1606, THE FIRST AMSTERDAM EDITION OF THE MERCATOR ATLAS APPEARED. MANY ENLARGED EDITIONS WERE PUBLISHED IN VARIOUS LANGUAGES UP TO 1638.

DATA IS FROM KOEMAN AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE COPY IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.
