DESCRIPTION : THIS MANUSCRIPT MAP IS INCLUDED IN THIS LISTING BECAUSE IT WAS THE FIRST MAP ON WHICH THE CHESAPEAKE BAY (CHESEPIOOC SINUS) WAS IDENTIFIED. IT SHOWS THE COAST FROM CAPE CHARLES TO CAPE LOOKOUT AND WEST FROM C. HATTERAS TO THE MOUTH OF THE ROANOKE AND NEUSE RIVERS. IT WAS MADE WHILE THE AUTHOR WAS ON THE TRIPS OF EXPLORATION TO THE ROANOKE COLONY IN 1585, A TRIP INITIATED BY SIR WALTER RALEIGH.

THIS MAP AND THE PRINTED WHITE MAP OF VIRGINIA IN 1590 (SEE MAP # 090W5), WHICH APPEARED IN DE BRY'S EDITION OF HARRIOTT'S A BRIEFE AND TRUE RELATION AND WAS TAKEN FROM THE MANUSCRIPT MAP, ARE VERY SIMILAR IN AREA, TOPOGRAPHY AND NOMENCLATURE. THE MANUSCRIPT MAP, THE ORIGINAL OF WHICH IS LOCATED IN THE BRITISH MUSEUM, PORTRAYS SEVERAL HUNDRED MILES OF COAST IN MORE DETAIL AND GREATER ACCURACY THAN WAS DONE FOR MANY YEARS TO COME FOR ANY OTHER PART OF THE NEW WORLD.

DATA IS FROM CUMMING.

EDITION & STATE INFO : THIS IS A MANUSCRIPT MAP.
