DESCRIPTION : THIS VENETIAN CHART IS TYPICAL OF THOSE OF THE MID-SIXTEENTH CENTURY. IT COVERS AN AREA FROM EASTERN EUROPE TO CENTRAL NORTH AMERICA, INCLUDING THE EAST COAST OF NORTH AMERICA. IT IS SIGNIFICANT IN A MARYLAND-CHESAPEAKE COLLECTION ONLY IN THAT IT ILLUSTRATES THAT NEITHER THE CHESAPEAKE BAY NOR ITS MOUTH IS YET ON THE MAP. AN ENGRAVED PORTOLAN-STYLE CHART, IT CONTAINS SEVERAL SIGNIFICANT PLACE NAMES IN AMERICA, INCLUDING CANADA, ARCADIA, AND OCHELAY (MONTREAL). IN THE MIDDLE OF THE 16th CENTURY, ITALY WAS THE CENTER OF THE EUROPEAN MAP TRADE, REFLECTING ITS WEALTH, THE COSMOPOLITAN ENTERPRISE OF ITS INHABITANTS, AND THE EXCELLENT WORKMANSHIP OF ITS ENGRAVERS. BERTELLI WAS ONE OF THE LEADING PUBLISHERS AND ENGRAVERS OF VENICE, WHERE MOST MAPS OF AN INTERNATIONAL CHARACTER WERE PUBLISHED.

DATA IS FROM TOOLEY, LAYNG AND FROM OBSERVATION OF THE MAP IN THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION.

EDITION & STATE INFO : ONLY A SINGLE EDITION AND STATE OF THIS MAP AS DESCRIBED HAS BEEN IDENTIFIED.

HFC OWNERSHIP DATA : THE HUNTINGFIELD COLLECTION HAS A BEAUTIFUL COLORED COPY OF THIS MAP WITH AN ACQ. # OF N027-HE2 AND A MDHR # OF MSA SC1399-209.
