MARY KEYSOR MEYER, 1918 - 1998
By Robert Barnes

Mary K. Meyer died unexpectedly on January 29 at North Arundel Hospital. She was associated with the Archives as a member of the Search Room Advisory Committee.  Some thirty five years ago, P. William Filby, Librarian at the Maryland Historical Society, asked me if I thought it would be a good idea to hire Mary Meyer as a genealogical reference librarian. I knew Mary as a fellow member of the Maryland Genealogical Society (where she was a Charter Member), and was happy to say that it would be an excellent idea.

During her years at the Maryland Historical Society, Mary helped establish the Committee on Genealogy and edited the Maryland Magazine of Genealogy, one of the best periodicals in the field. Mary also worked to establish the Genealogical Council of Maryland and proposed several of its ongoing activities: surveys of the location of Maryland Bible Records, and of Maryland Cemeteries and their records. She also established "Provincial Families of Maryland."  Mary was active in the Anne Arundel County Genealogical Society. She was also a Councillor of the National Genealogical Society. Her family roots were in New York and Ohio, but one day she learned that one of her ancestors had lived in Maryland, and she was delighted to think that she had some Maryland roots.

Her many publications have been invaluable to researchers. Her Genealogical Research in Maryland: A Guide is now in its third edition. She worked with P. William Filby on the first several volumes of Passenger and Immigration Lists Index, and also brought out several editions of the Directory of Genealogical Societies in the United States and Canada. Mary frequently remarked that genealogists should "put something back," that is, to make a contribution to the world of family history research. She enjoyed researching her family's history and she certainly did put a great deal back.
