MARYLAND COMMISSION ON ARTISTIC PROPERTY MEETING
by Carol Borchert
The first meeting of the re-organized Maryland Commission on Artistic Property took place on November 6 at the Archives. Those present included Mrs. Glendening and representatives from the Academy of the Arts, the Maryland Historical Society, the Maryland Institute College of Art, the Walters Art Gallery, the Baltimore Museum of Art, the Peabody Institute, and the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts. After a welcome by Ed, Mrs. Glendening presented certificates to new members Alan Fern, Michael Humphries, Gerald Johnson, Toby Mendez and Francoise Yohalem.
It was announced that a recent re-appraisal of works of art in the Annapolis Complex and Peabody collections was undertaken this past spring and Ed noted that the overall value of both collections was enhanced by this appraisal, and that the results will be available in the near future through the State Archives website by password. He also noted that the Peabody Collection is entirely on-line now through the Archives website, and that any researcher or interested person can access information on the artist, title, classification and location of each object. He also said that the Archives is probably the first institution in the nation to make this type of information available on-line.
A number of announcements were made concerning the status of the collection, including the present review of the condition of objects by the Carol, and the recent application for a conservation assessment grant. The donation of an eighteenth-century portrait believed to be a member of the Calvert family was also reported, as was the unfortunate closing of the Baltimore City Life Museums and the return to the Archives of objects on loan to that institution.
Several loan requests also came before the Commission, and it moved that Mary Cassatt's Young Woman In Black (pictured above) should be loaned to the Art Institute of Chicago for its upcoming exhibition. The Commission also approved the inclusion of the painting in the Baltimore Museum of Art's upcoming exhibition "Impressionist Portraits from American Collections". The Commission voted to accept a proposal for an exhibit drawn from the Gilmor Collection works on paper of the Peabody Collection. Robert Gilmor, Jr. (1774-1848) collected a large number of works on paper during the 1840s. As a native of Baltimore with strong connections to the city's Peabody Institute, a major portion of Gilmor's collection was donated to this institution, and became part of the Peabody Art Collection. The planned exhibition will feature a number of the works on paper collected by Gilmor and will be co-curated by the Commission's Curator of Artistic Property and the Curator and Archivist of the Peabody Institute. Mrs. Glendening agreed that Government House would prove an appropriate venue for the exhibition.
The Secretary announced that the Archives' staff is working on a book featuring works of art from the state collection. The book is entitled From Private Mansion to Public Residence: The Official Homes of the First Ladies and Hostesses of Maryland and publication date is scheduled for October of 1998.
The meeting concluded with a presentation to Mrs. Glendening of a framed copy of The Baltimore News of May 11, 1907 featuring a photograph of Mrs. Warfield and Mark Twain. Mrs. Glendening thanked the Archives for all of their work to ensure continued research into the lives of Maryland's First Ladies.
