PRESERVATION WORKSHOP

On Friday, September 13 the Maryland State Archives will hold a second preservation workshop with emphasis on preventative care and storage. Designed for historical societies, libraries, archives and other organizations with printed and manuscript collections, the workshop will provide basic guidance to institutions that do not yet have preservation strategies. The program will include preventative maintenance and environmental monitoring; storage design and furniture; materials recommended for storage of different kinds of paper and objects; basic enclosures for collections; and in-house treatment options.

Leading the workshop will be Hanna Szczepanowska, Supervising Conservator at the Archives. She is a Fellow of the American Institute for Conservation and worked as a conservator in the United States and Europe. Other instructors include Betty Seifert, Chief Conservator at Jefferson Patterson Park and Museum; Stephen Collins, a private conservator working on projects at the Archives; and Andrea Beard, Conservation Technician at the Archives.

The workshop is limited to twenty participants. It will be held at the Maryland State Archives from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The fee for the workshop is $75.00 which includes lunch and materials.

GENEALOGY WORKSHOP

The Maryland State Archives is offering a one-day workshop on Saturday, October 5 on how to use records at the Archives to research immigrant ancestors. The workshop will be a thorough introduction to genealogical records at the Archives and elsewhere for the beginner as well as an excellent refresher course for more experienced researchers.

Topics to be covered include locating homes and ancestry of colonial settlers, indentured servants and convicts in early Maryland, 19th century immigration patterns and records to locate ancestors, and the naturalization process.

Robert W. Barnes and Patricia D. Anderson, both volunteers at the Archives and former members of the Search Room Advisory Committee, will be the workshop leaders. Mr. Barnes has been conducting genealogical research in Maryland for over 35 years and is the compiler of several standard source books in Maryland genealogy. Ms. Anderson has taught genealogy courses for the Baltimore County Adult Education Program and has written extensively on Maryland genealogy.

The workshop will be held at the Hall of Records Building in Annapolis from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The registration fee is $50.00 which includes lunch and materials. Registration is limited to 35 participants. Forms may be obtained from the Archives.

STATE AND LOCAL RECORDS REFERENCE REPORT
by Kevin Swanson

The July total of 969 reference requests represents an 8.6% increase over the July 1995 total of 892. This increase in requests was accompanied by an impressive 14.9% increase in the number of records circulated, from 1360 last year to 1563 in 1996. There were 11 more vital records requested in July 1996 (439) than in 1995 (428). Circulation of district court records increased by 20%, 330 compared to 275. Requests for records of the circuit courts and other agencies increased by 20.9%, 794 compared to 657.

Overall, the judiciary continues as the largest single user of SLR reference services. The number of reference requests received from the courts increased by 8.5% (230 compared to 212), while the number of records requested increased by an astounding 47.3% (514 compared to 349). Court requests accounted for 23.7% of all requests received and 32.9% of total record circulation.

Requests received by phone again decreased in July (326 compared to 336) accounting for 33.6% of total requests. The number of requests faxed to the Archives increased from 18 to 69. Overall, fax requests made up 7.1% of the July 1996 total, while accounting for 2% of the July 1995 total. More requests were generated from the search room (116) than had been the case in July 1995 (88). Search room requests accounted for 12% of July 1996 reference activity as compared to 9.9% last year, an increase of 2.1%. We also received 14 requests handled in the lobby without requiring the patron to register for the search room. This compares favorably with the 25 lobby requests received in July 1995.

The number of phone/fax requests (395) fell short of the number of requests received through the mail (444). Phone/fax requests accounted for 40.8% of total requests, with the mail accounting for 45.8%.

Revenue from reference activity declined 2.6% from last July, $7712 compared to $7920.

REFERENCE REPORT
by Pat Melville

Several researchers in July expressed an interest in convicts during the colonial period, including convict servants in Maryland, convicts in the colonies, and convict transportation and emigration from England. A related topic concerned domestic slave trading. Ethnic group studies involved Native American women and the Scottish community in Maryland.

Local history subjects included Tolchester Beach from 1877 to 1962 and Cambridge. Religious topics pertained to Catholicism in Maryland and the Self Revelation Church of Absolute Monism. Military studies concerned naval battles on the Chesapeake and the Maryland Navy, 1800-1820. Researchers also sought information about Father Andrew White, education in Maryland, writers and booksellers in Baltimore, Principio Iron Works in Cecil County, Lafayette's visit to Annapolis in 1824, and food in the colonial Chesapeake area. Staff searched for a death certificate for a person listed on a grave marker found in a suburban backyard.

In July total circulation in the search room reached 10,438, up 7% over last years figure of 9755. The rise was due solely to the phenomenal jump in microfilm usage, up 30%. 7575 compared to 5828. Library circulation declined 24.2%, 931 compared to 1229. The use of original records dropped 28.4%, 1932 compared to 2698.

The number of researchers using the search room increased 7.8%, 1452 compared to 1347 in July 1995. Returning patrons rose 8.8%, 1012 compared to 930. New researchers went up 5.5%, 440 compared to 417.

As usual phone reference statistics increased in July, rising 8.8%, 1332 calls compared to 1224 last year. The daily average of 61 remained the same because the Archives was open two more days than last year.
