LADY OF THE HOUSE EXHIBIT
The exhibit features over fifty items from across the country including portraits, silver, photographs, rare books, furnishings, and china representing many of the fifty-four women who served as either first lady or official hostess of Maryland from the revolutionary period to the present. During the opening reception, Mrs. Glendening dedicated the night to former First Lady Helen Tawes, who is represented in the exhibit by her portrait, a photograph, and an autographed copy of her cookbook, My Favorite Maryland Recipes. Mrs. Tawes, who served as first lady from 1959 to 1967, worked diligently to gain recognition for the women who filled the role of first lady and official hostess in Maryland. In 1961, she initiated the custom of having an official portrait made for each first lady. She started the collection with her own portrait and the portraits of her four predecessors, Honolulu McKeldin, Dorothy Lane, Eugenia O'Conor, and Edna Nice. All five paintings are part of the exhibit.

At the conclusion of her remarks, Mrs. Glendening called State Archivist Dr. Edward C. Papenfuse to the podium and presented him with one volume of the chronicles that she has compiled covering her tenure as first lady. Presently consisting of eleven volumes, these chronicles contain Mrs. Glendening's papers, speeches, event programs, news clippings, photographs, and press releases since becoming first lady in 1995. She expects that she will have nine additional volumes by the end of the Glendening administration. Dr. Papenfuse remarked that, "We're very pleased to have these materials," and "we wish every first lady had done the same." The chronicles have been accessioned in Special Collections [MSA SC 5283] and are available for research in the Archives public search room.

Mrs. Glendening and Emily Oland Squires
On Tuesday, March 14, 2000, Governor and Mrs. Glendening hosted an opening reception at Government House for the Maryland State Archives exhibit, Lady of the House: First Ladies and Official Hostesses of Maryland, 1777-2000. The exhibition, along with the forthcoming book and web site entitled If These Walls Could Speak: The Official Residences and Public Lives of Maryland's First Ladies and Official Hostesses, 1777-2000, is the culmination of over five years of research and writing by Archives' staff members. The exhibition was developed by Director of Biographical Research, Emily Oland Squires, who joined the project as an intern in 1995. Ms. Squires was assisted by members of the Artistic Properties and Public Outreach Staff including Mimi Calver, Maura McCarthy, Hillary Thomas, and Rob MacAdam and the Conservation Staff including Hanna Szczepanowska, Jennifer Cruickshank, and Keith Jameson.
