He was bom near Aberdeen about 9 miles southeast of Churchville (on today's Aberdeen Proving Ground, a U.S. Army base). After an apprenticeship in Baltimore (possibly under Robert Gary Long, Jr. (1810-1849) he pursued his architectural practice in Baltimore. As a country and retirement residence he purchased a small farm in Glenville, about 3!/2 miles northeast of Churchville, where he died. He is buried in the graveyard of Spesutia Church, St. George's Parish, Ferryman, Maryland, near his birthplace. His career is documented by research in the Baltimore Architecture Foundation.
