Biography:
Joseph was an enslaved man boy who was owned by Benjamin Phillips of Fishing Creek in Dorchester County, Maryland. His parents Jerry and Martha, were also enslaved by Benjamin Phillips. On or about September 14, 1814, Joseph and his family were taken away by British soldiers, from the home of Benjamin Phillips. At the time Joseph was six years old and worth $200.
Following the war Benjamin Philips filed a claim for his five slaves with B. L. Lear an agent who submitted the evidence to the Department of State. Maryland slave owners were awarded $280 for each slave they lost during the war.Return to Joseph's Introductory Page
