War of 1812 Refugee, Dorchester County, Maryland, 1828
Biography:
Jerry was an enslaved man who was owned by Benjamin Phillips of Fishing Creek in Dorchester County, Maryland. Jerry had a wife named Martha and three children, Joseph, Mary and Jerry. On or about September 14, 1814, Jerry and his family were carried away by British soldiers in a canoe that belonged to Captain John Parker. At the time Jerry was about 27 or 28 years of age and worth $350.
Following the war Benjamin Philips filed a claim for his five slaves with B. L. Lear an agent who submitted the evidence to the Department of State. Maryland slave owners were awarded $280 for each slave they lost during the war.
