Anne (b. circa 1801 - d. ?)
MSA SC 5496-51920

Biography:

Anne was a slave in Dorchester County. She was born around 1801 and was owned by William Stevens.

Anne ran away on April 13, 1825.1 In an attempt to recapture her, Stevens posted a runaway advertisement in the Cambridge Chronicle and Eastern Shore Advertiser on April 23. He described her as "well made... of a dark brown color, or between a black and a light mulatto; and has a notable scar between her eyes." The scar would have been a particularly difficult distinguishing mark for Anne to hide in her attempt to avoid detection. Stevens also noted her clothing, writing that she "had on when she went away, a country made dress with a copperas stripe in it; she also carried with her a blue plaid domestic dress." The extra set of clothes Anne took with her would be useful to her in her escape, since her country made dress could give her away as a runaway. Additionally, she could have sold a set  of clothes. Stevens offered a reward of $100 if Anne was caught in Maryland, and if she was apprehended outside of the state he upped the reward to $120.
