Adam (b. ? - d. ?)
MSA SC 5496-51551
Fled from Slavery, Anne Arundel County, Maryland 1749

Biography:

Adam was an enslaved African American owned by Zachariah Maccubbin, a property owner near London Town. On Wednesday, March 1, 1749, Maccubbin posted a runaway advertisement for Adam in the Maryland Gazette stating that Adam ran away on February 22, 1749.1

Adam was described as "a likely black Fellow, five Feet eight Inches high... [with] a small Scar on one of his Cheeks and speaks very good English."2 He was wearing and had with him a "Drugget Jacket and Breeches, two Osnabrigs Shirts, one white ditto...a Pair of Negro's Shoes..."3 Parts of the advertisement detailing his age, clothing, and belongings are illegible.

Maccubbin offered a three pounds reward "besides what the Law allows" to whomever found and returned Adam.4 However, Adam does not appear listed in Zachariah Maccubbin's inventory taken in 1754 after Maccubin's death.5 Thus, it is not known exactly what happened to Adam.
