MSA SC 5496-51550
Fled from Slavery, Anne Arundel County, Maryland  1756

Biography:

Peter was an enslaved mulatto owned by Henry Gassaway, a property owner near London Town. On Thursday, November 25, 1756, Gassaway posted a runaway advertisement for Peter saying that he ran away on November 15 of that year.1 Peter was described as "a lusty, well-fet, dark Mulatto Fellow... he has an impudent Look, and speaks boldly."2 He had on "a Country Cloth Waistcoat, a Pair of Leather Breeches, and a Pair of old Stockings and Shoes."3

Gassaway offered a reward of "One Pistole, besides what the Law allows" to whomever caught Peter.4 It is not known exactly what happened to Peter.
