Biography:
Rachel Patterson was an enslaved woman who belonged to John Mackall, Jr. of Saint Mary's County, Maryland. Rachel was the wife of Jerry Patterson, who was also enslaved by Mackall.
In 1814,
while America was at war with great Britain, Rachel Patterson escaped
from John Mackall, Jr. Rachel joined her husband Jerry and other
slaves, who were owned by Mackall and his son in law James M. Broome,
in escaping to the British fleet lying in the Potomac River.
