Anna Maria Scott (b. circa 1817 - d. ?)
MSA SC 5496-51368
Maryland State Colonization Society Emigrant to Liberia from Talbot County, 1835

Biography:

Anna Maria (sometimes recorded as Anna Mariah or Ann) Scott was freed by George Williams of Baltimore City.1 Some sources give her place of residence as Talbot County.2, 3 This may be an error, or she may have lived in Talbot County at some point. She may have been the sister or other relative of fellow emigrant, William Scott, a manumitted slave from Talbot County who was travelling with his wife Caroline Chambers Scott. The three Scotts departed from Baltimore on June 28, 1835 on the schooner Harmony, arriving at Cape Palmas, Liberia on August 23, 1835. William died shortly after their arrival.4

By 1837, Anna Maria was married to Thomas Jackson, a mason.5, 6, 7, 8 Caroline also found a new husband in Liberia, Daniel Banks.9 However, by 1840, Caroline had been widowed a second time, this time with a daughter, Georgeann.10 The two women probably maintained their friendship or familial ties. On the 1843 census, Caroline Banks' name follows those of Ann and Thomas Jackson, suggesting that Caroline was living in the same household as Ann or in a nearby residence.11 By 1848, Caroline had married her third husband, Henry Pinkett, and the two women no longer appeared to be living near each other.12, 13 By that time, Ann's own family had expanded. In 1845, Ann gave birth to a girl named Victoria (or Victory).14 It appears that the Jacksons had a live-in servant or "girl" named Eliza living with them in 1848.15 The following year, a one-year old son, John, was also a member of the household. This 1849 census lists Thomas wife as a woman named Eliza.16 However, this is likely an error due to the enumerator confusing the names of the family's servant, Eliza, with Thomas' wife. Furthermore, on the 1852 census, Ann is recorded once again, as a widow and householder with her two children, Victoria and John.17
